they do...mostly, the skyline offers many different lineups with different "versions" of the engine:
350z: VQ35DE set at 280ps 350GT-8: VQ35DE set at 272ps 300GT: VQ30DD set at 260ps 250GT: VQ25DD set at 215ps 250GT-4: VQ25DD set at 215ps (RWD or AWD) 250GTm: VQ25DD set at 215ps here's a good link. http://www.freshalloy.com/site/featu...rms/home.shtml here's a quote: "3.5VQ V-6 with 260bhp standard with 5-speed manumatic. Based on acclaimed FM RWD platform, shared with the new 350Z." also, what's really neat here, is that we now know that the G35, and possibly the 350z could be AWD...of course...I doubt anyone would really want to throw money into that project...but it is something to think about... |

The concept skyline GTR uses a very similar (if not the same) chassis, but I think it has a different motor. I haven't been reading up on the new skyline GTR, but I believe it uses either either a V8 (from one of the infinitis) or a twin-turbocharged version of the 350z engine.
In short, it sounds like your 'friend' could be 'more right' than you. OTOH if you're talking about OLD skyline GTRs, no, they use different chassis and different engines. (BNR32, BCNR33, BNR34, all with RB26DETT) |

On the other other side of the pacific, the skyline sans GTR naming (one hasn't come out yet) us what we know as the G35, both coupe and sedan versions. The Z, is still known as the fairlady as it always has been. The thing is that they all share a chassis as nissan is doing to save money, remember that they came damn close to the shitter without rrenault's help...

Technicaly your friend is correct if by Skyline he means the new (what we call G35) Skyline. If by skyline he means the R34 he is wrong. The 350z and the G35 coupe (Skyline in japan) are essentially the same car in all the places that count (engine, transmission, frame, etc.)

hehe, just getting around to checking this thread...sorry. I didn't think that you meant an old skyline..sorry. Yeah, if you mean the R32-R34's...then yeah, you're right...completely different.
and as for the altima w/rear slot holes....I believe the altima is the same chassis as either the laurel or the sunny...either of which come in AWD or FWD. in fact, I believe someone posted a picture of an AWD altima in Europe. It's kinda like the 240/silvia thing. once again, Nissan rebadges a car, puts a different engine in it, and sells it in NorthAmerica. |

Altima was a Bluebird in other markets. They had an SR20DET 4WD version of it called the Bluebird SSS. There have been times I've been tempted to buy a newer Altima (not the newest), and drop in a GTiR or an X-Trail motor mated to the 4WD rear subframe drivetrain of the Bluebird SSS. Too many projects, too little time.

thanks RUF, I knew it was there..just wasn't sure which name it is, and I know both those cars came in AWD.
and I agree with you...my fiance has an Altima...and I've been kinda keeping that in the back of my mind. I think that'd make a great daily driver. safer in the rain and snow then my RWD 240. btw...since you know about it...the old stanza...was that AWD in Japan? I've been thinking about getting one of those to play with...as the design is similar to the s13 coupe... |

the 350 is fast and cool lokoking for sure,
but nissan expects to sell like 35,000 of them. i dont care how fast it is, it's gonna be even more common than RSX's and Celica's. there is something to be said for an element of originality, and the 350z will lose any originality in a few short months |

well....I don't think you should put them in the same category as the RSX and celica....try the 300z. I mean, I see 300z everwhere....and I don't mind. If I see a 350z on every corner....I won't mind either
the first time I see a turbo'd 350z..or SC'd.....I'll lose my mind....I mean..holy crap... now...they need to put out with the GTR. with that...all will be good. and maybe create a s16, he he. |

One aspect I can't see the 350z beating a skyline in though (this is more of an engine comparison) is revvability. The RB26DETT had a redline of somewhere around 7,500 to 8,000 rpm, whereas the 350z in US form has a paltry 6,500 redline or so... that's lower than our Truck-engined 240sxs!! (at best, the 350z's redline is 6,750 -- if memory serves)
Now seriously; how much fun is a car that won't even rev past 7k? Or is this too much of a CA18/honda mindset? |
