Formula DRIFT Round 2 - "Road to the Championship" Road Atlanta - May 6-7, 2011
Formula DRIFT Returns to Road Atlanta Home of the Inaugural Formula DRIFT Event Back in 2004 Road Atlanta opened in 1970 and was home of the inaugural Formula DRIFT event back in 2004. The 2.54-mile, 12-turn track is owned by Panoz Motorsports and hosts many events throughout the year including Formula DRIFT. Utilizing Turns 9, 10A, and 10B of the road course, cars slide sideways through the turns and then hit the loop before the Suzuki bridge and back towards Turns 10B, 10A, and then ends dramatically by drifting uphill on an incline. Round 2: Road to the Championship at Road Atlanta will be one of the most anticipated events of the season. The event will be spread between 2 days of drifting action. Drivers are tested on the fast entry and tight turns of the road course and will have to prove that they have what it takes to reach the podium. I was there...it was a great time, met a lot of drivers, saw some even a better driving, and saw some hot chicks!
But Tony angelo needs to step down from being a judge. |

I think all the judges need to step down..
Can you explain why a car that straightens a little bit (O'Sullivan) vs a car that spins out because he can't follow slow cars (Forsberg) warrants a OMT? I'm just glad Forsberg didn't make it all the way, glad to see Andy Yen pulled his head out of Forsberg's crotch, swallowed the semen and make a right call for once.. I love Chris Forsberg, he's an awesome driver, but he just didn't have his stuff yesterday and I think he got bonus points for being a crowd favorite.. the same went for Gitten, but after he got lucked into a OMT he won that one.. |

That is fucking insane. It's crazy how he was killing those v8 swapped, big sponsor guys in his stripped and caged DD beater with a T28 sr, wheels, diff, and suspension.
Yeah and the judges blow. Mike Essa was robbed and no way Aasbo lost to Dai. OMT at the least. |

Essa was going hard. I actually agreed on Dai/Aasbo though.. I thought Dai had a better line in the second run, I know you are supposed to follow the leader, but Dai noticed that Aasbo's line was off and Dai corrected and actually got close.. I'm pretty sure they were close to time on the track though, and with some of the ridiculous OMT's they already had, they basically had to pick a winner for the final without a OMT

Anyone else think Matt powers losing becuz he was touching the lead car on initiation?
He didn't hit him, he touched him. He broke the composite door! I mean wtf! If that was dk and orido judging, the event woulda been over and powers would be crowned king of the day.

Matt lost drift on turn 2 of his lead run, but hear what your saying. FD judging promotes stale drifting. I really wish they would allow passing. |

Actually if Orido or DK was judging it would have been ruled the same, if one car touches another car, it's an automatic DQ. Powers was rocking like no tomorrow, but you can't touch the other car, period..

What D1 have you been watching? When Ueo was tapping people with his rear bumper without causing a spin it was promoted. The rule is if the contact causes the lead driver to lose drift or spin it is a zero. Other than that, close tandem and love taps are encouraged.

Was a very interesting weekend. I came out to support all my guys that could make it (Tony B, Fabian and Chris Licup couldn't get the $$$ together), and having Conrad qualify first again with Matt close on his heels and everyone but Luke and Ryan Kado making top 32 was nice.
Conrad ran into a very weird cam/crank sensor sync issue that had us on the phone with our tuner (Mitch Pederson from MPTuning) right before top 32. Seems like the timing chain is stretching, causing a sync problem, which causes momentary cutout. Psyched him out that the car was running so badly all of a sudden and he put it into the dirt in top 32. His backwards entry was SUPER LEGIT though! Matt Powers unfortunately got put up against Matt Field (one of my other sponsored guys, and a crowd favorite) and knocked him out in top 16. Lots of people said it should have been OMT, but Field's line was off and that counts more than his crazy balls-to-the-wall style that run. Matt Powers' next run with DMac was interesting, as everyone said, Dmac parked it coming into the first apex and instead of choking up and possibly spinning, Mattycakes drove through his fucking door. Didn't change Dmac's line enough to DQ Matt, but it did create some gap and the judges gave it to Dmac. It happens, and Matt wasn't too upset about it. Mike Essa went out in top 32 to Pattycakes, that was a similar deal. Pat parked it BEFORE the second inside clip, and Mike hit him and spun, which actually put Pat back on line to not straighten lol. If Mike had plowed through like Pat expected him to, they both would spin and Mike would've advanced. Charles drove really well against Gushi but Ken's lead run was just too awesome. Charles has been having steering issues ever since Ryan Kado drove into him during practice (which is also why Ryan didn't get a second qualifying run, had to weld suspension pieces back together). Hope Charles can get everything sorted before Palm Beach. Luke @ Blu808 was REALLY popular in the pits ~ everyone loved the C6! Sucky thing was, one of his rod bearings took a dump and he was down on power/knocking all the way through his second qualifying lap. Still qualified 33rd, tied with Pfeiffer.

I don't know who you're referring to, but all these guys are on 265+ R-compounds, and you need so much speed to be competitive that all the alignments are either square (no toe) or toe'd IN in the back. It takes a bit of hp to get those sticky tires to stay spinning.
Not to mention, the top finishers all have 550+whp. It may be possible to be successful with less, but it's not the norm.

You must not have anyclue who kt or orido is haha. Or ever seen them judge. Being able to tap the lead car without faulting them is basically the best drift you can do from a follow. Jordan innovations I want to say you do dope work to dope cars. There has to be a reason why so many top qualifiers go to you. Matt powers for president.
