is this a dystopia yet? seriously look at this new police toy v. phone scanner thing
so seriously, if we were looking to draw the line somewhere, this would probably be a good spot, right? scanning peoples' phones without probable cause. fuck everything about this.

I'm more concerned with your lack of punctuation lately.
In all seriousness though, I would sooner smash my phone than hand it over. Pry my smart phone from my cold dead hands.

Probable cause is easy. Invasion of privacy is another thing.
Who actually said they have used it on someone who hasn't "commited" a crime?..or for anyone who is locked up. Their "personal" belongings then become part of an investigation, of course depending on the crime/offense. My take on this is, its silly on one hand and just another tool for doing work on the another. Because let's not forget about all the smart phones that have apps for police scanner. Or the fact that every cell phone is a camara/video camara. Point is police use their "tools" and so does the general public.

100% agree . i could UNDERSTAND if it was only to be used if someone was suspected of a crime or matched the description of someone in a crime. but its horrendous that they are blatantly violating peoples privacy and ESSENTIALLY performing an illegal search everytime they scan a phone.
however, to counter that, couldn't you just throw your phone in your glove box or center console everytime you get pulled over...? |

hey bub, my grammar is tops. i'm just too lazy to hit shift for every sentence
and sometimes i don't like periods at the end of sentences sure, but really, i don't want to have to deal with that shit. and i'd like to have my phone out and ready to record video if the cop is being a chode.

If they really wanted your phone records and text messages, they can get them straight from the phone company. Technically, they legally can search your phone for 'no reason'. The PATRIOT Act is still in affect.
But I'm sure every police cruiser isn't flying around with these things taking everyone's personal information off of their phones for the fuck of it. Granted, they could probably get your credit card information if they really wanted to, and there are shady cops out there, but if they would even bother to use this thing- it would probably be in support of a drug/prostitution sting or for looking for OTHER people's personal information because they suspect you of identity theft. Really, the likely-hood of you being arrested or even getting a ticket for anything that's on your phone, outside of some serious felony, is slim to none. Cops don't give a shit that much. What are they going to do, see pictures of your friends smoking pot? They don't care about that crap. |

Uploaded a virus/self destruct mode to your phone and as soon as anything tries to hack it it turn into a brick and lock up/brick the other device. Or better yet it'll explode upon communication to the other device.

the real problem with stuff like this is half of us go "that's a problem", but then the other half goes "what do you have to hide, terrorist, 9/11, jesus, rights for fetuses not for gays", and then this shit is in every car so another skyscraper doesn't get airplane'd. grumble grumble <3 USA but it makes me raeg

Kind of reminds me, They had a story in the local news paper about how the town cops had gotten a new camera that they strap onto a cruiser to take pictures or you licence plate so they can find out if you have any warrants, valid registration, or valid license.
The thing that bugs me is that we have a huge federal/state/town deficit and they are buying fucking toys, they can type in the goddamn plate number and look it up. |

why not, i say...this would help the efficiency of the judicial system by leaps and bounds...no more lying felons/criminals that waste tax payers' money in court...no more crooked cops that say one thing, but raped another...
