It seems as if its coming from like the axle or hub, but the sound goes away if i yank the ebrake(z32 setup) or press the brakes firmly, when i release either, the sound comes back.. it feels as if something is wrong as as if there is metal on metal or something rough. Sorry not very specific I know but its the most im able to gather. I took all the suspension links apart check out the hub and axle and everything looks good. Ive been rollin s-chassis' for 7+ years and have never encountered anything like this. anyone have a diagnosis?

I had a similar situation 2 weeks ago while driving, I started to hear this weird noise coming from my passenger rear wheel. Everything looked good but I though my wheel bearings were going bad or maybe the axel, comes out to be that my tires are brand new and I must have picked up some mulch around on the road and it was stuck on my wheel, everytime my wheel spun the mulch or dirt hit the road and it sound like a poping noise. I know you said it sounds like metal on metal but try checking your tires for any dirty in between the threads. My .o2

anyways. now on to a more logical response....

have you checked to see the condition of your brake pads? if they are worn down they can make a scrubbing/scratchy/grinding noise if the pads are in need of replacing. usually when u hit the brakes the noise will go away.

Check condiiton of the rear pads/rotors.

also be sure the AXLE main center nuts are tight and also be sure your lug nuts are tight

thanks for the responses.. Im going to check out the tires, but in regards to brakes, the pads are in great condition barely even worn and even. the axle nut is tightened, was before and after i pulled the axle..

Sounds like it probably has something to do with your brakes. If it was your wheel bearings going out they would constently be making noise. You best bet would be to take apart your brake assembly in the rear (i.e. brake rotors and pads, leave the shoes on). Pretty much the brake pads and shoes will tell the whole story. If the pads are too low and grinding metal to metal or just grinding the indicator tab you will have a scored up rotor. If the Brake shoesare worn unevenly between the primary and secondary shoe, that typically means incorrect adjustment of warped inside drum. If all of these things look right the only other thing I can suggest is to check out the rotors baffle plate. If it is bent even a little it can rub the top of the rotor causing a wierd grinding noise. Hope this helps good luck.

You also could have the inner shoe too tight and is constantly touching the rotor.

^ thats true. Main reason why i hate drum style ebrake set ups.

im doing my 03 altima rear rotor with z31 brackets on mine this weekend hopefully mine goes smooth lol.

Well, its easy to adjust...just have to tighten the horse shoes until they clamp down, then you're supposed to back it out 6-7 turns IIRC.

So bump! after some time I finally found out what was going, and it wasnt the ebrake shoes or hub/wheel assembly. what was actually going on appears to be the driveshaft, rubbing agaisnt this metal holder thing for the ebrake cables.. it seems that either its hanging too low or something, the assembly does seem to move more than i would expect it too when i was underneath having someone pull the ebrake(which when driving and pulled would make the sound go away) which makes sense because when its pulled the assembly gets closer to the chassis and farther from the driveshaft.. anyone every had this issue or know what I can do to go about resolving it. havnt had much time due to having 2 other cars one being the daily that ive been working on. pic attached.
