i installed my AGX's and ground controls 2 weeks ago, and i didnt get any dust boot covers with them so i didnt put any on. is that bad? i pulled my wheels off to adjust the rear shocks and there was dirt all over the spring, but not on the shock piston. is it alright to not have it, or should i pull them off and put them on?

Well, the seals on your shocks are not perfect. They will allow some small bits of debris and dust to enter and mix with the oil of your shocks. I agree that this is not the end of the world, and you're obviously not off-roading with it. But if I were you, I'd order some dust boots from Tire Rack. I got these for my Konis and they were only $10 each (cut the top half of the bump stop off...and make sure you put the FRONT on the front and the REAR on the rear...ask Steve for clarification <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='

![]() ![]() The unfortunate rest of us have old P.O.S. 240s and our dust boots are crumbling beyond repair. You should have seen mine. Literally, the front ones came out in 6-7 pieces. There was no saving them. I could see the shock shafts from the first day I owned the car. Yeah - my dust boots look like they've been though a war! They just slouch down around the bottom of the exposed shock shaft <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'> [note to self: buy new susp.]
Of course, must aftermarket suspensions and many other makes of car don't have dust boots at all (so I'm not too worried). |

Hmm... well on the dust boot thing. My neighbor does hardcore rock climbing/4x4ing/mud bogging. When I was installing my AGX I thought the same way about the boots, but his comment was... "why the hell would you do that? Last time I had dust boots on my truck it just made moisture stay on the inside of the boot causing premature rusting to happen".
Now he doesn't use boots on any of his shocks on any of his 3 cars (2 of which see the elements regularly) and has never had a problem. So I left mine off as well, no probs. i never thought about the rust thing either. i think im gonna get a set (my old ones were crumbled too) and just cut them in half to them on so i dont have to pull the suspension off again...

Why would you cut them in half? That destroys the integrity of the boot and will just allow dust to get in there and collect in NO time. That option would be actually worse than having no boots.

Mine was in 6-7 pieces too. If anyone else has it like this, get that shit off ASAP. One of the pieces from the dust boot was stuck. |
