DIY:NX1600 Digital into S13 (240sx)

CAR = 92 240sx Vert Stock ka24de 5speed




Donor Car = 91 Nx1600 5speed

google pic but same car



Cluster




First you need
1. NX1600 Digital cluster with PIG TAILS


2. NX1600 Digital Speed Sensor or maybe sohc ka24e speed sensor


3. NX1600 Temp Sensor or sohc s13 temp maybe

4. 240sx DOHC Cluster Harness or SOHC Cluster Harness


5. Tape or shrink tubing

6. Wire cutters

7. 10mm 12mm for temp and speed sensor





Wiring
S13 dohc harness and nx pig tails

Far Left White plug
s13 ~~~~ nx
Red/blk ~ green/White 2wire white plug
yellow/purple? ~ yellow/blk yellow plug
yellow/white ~ yellow/green white plug
yellow/green ~ yellow white plug
white/red ~ yellow/red yellow plug
green ~ blue and yellow wire from blk plug and yellow plug
red/white ~ red/white yellow plug
blk ~ blk blk plug
blue/blk ~ yellow/green blk plug



center white plug s13
s13 ~ nx
green/yellow ~ green/yellow yellow plug
red/green ~ blk white plug
green/blk ~ green/blk white plug

S13 speed sensor

here is a picture of a s13 speed sensor

I have the set up too I just need help doing the wiring. I already mounter my nx cluster in my s13. =D it is awesome that you are finally going to help out do this conversion.

I followed this link on how to mount it. All you do is cut the upper retaining plastic bracket and then the whole cluster slides in. Then you use 2 self tapping screws to mount the left and right holes of the cluster. Then, everything should fall in in place =D. now how did you do the wiring hehe I am in very need of your help.

thats right as long as you have the nx temp sensor and speed sensor then you should be good. All there is left the wiring and nurvcom made this dream come true

I know both the de and sr have been covered, and I know this is almost completely custom, but would it be able to adapt to the ka-e? That has to be one of the best looking clusters Ive seen. great job and great write up.

I used a KA24E digital dash sub-harness to splice it into the NX one, it worked perfectly, so I don't see why not. I have a twin cam in my car, it used to be a single cam, but the speed sensor from a single cam tranny will make the speed read properly, and I did not have any problems using the twin cam temp sensor either.

Since this works with KA24DE and SR20, I assume the tachometer will not work with a KA24E. Am I right? Has anyone installed this on a KA24E?

Your getting the tach signal from the dash wiring and the signal is not much different between the two so I assume it will work on both E and DE signal. My car was a E originally so all my wiring is single cam dash wiring. It should work.

Smile hey

so now that I got the NX cluster hooked up in my car I am now going to try to wire up the HUD so it can work with the nx cluster. how to start. I saw that there are 3 wires that the hud uses. one gorund, one power and one signal from the mph gauge. I will try to hook it up this weekend and see if it worked.

If that was the case, then why doesn't SOHC tachs work with DOHC or SR motors? The interior harness is identical to both SOHC and DOHC. The signal however, is different. Do you think the signal is generated in the wiring? Something is sending the signal through the wires to the tach.. (duh). To my understanding, the signal comes from the CAS at the base of the distributor (i think).

In the E the signal goes straight to the tach but on the DE the signal goes through the ECU for some signal processing. The simple solution is to get a DE tach and swap it in the gague cluster. You even have the correct redline then.
If you can't get a DE tach then you could try putting a scope on the tach signal coming from the ECU and see if it is 0-5V or 0-12V. I _think_ the E signal is 0-12V and the DE is 0-5V, but I could easily be wrong. If I'm not mistaken (ha ha) then you could build a buffer circuit to translate the levels from 0-5V to 0-12V and see if that works. If I'm wrong then it would probably fry your E tach, so be warned.

Maybe this will help make the NX1600 cluster work for SOHC KA24

The direct signal and the sigal produced by the ECU in KA24DE's and SR's is different which is why the tachs arent directly compatable. HOWEVER, if you cut the wire going to the tach, and splice it into that signal coming from the ignitor, you can run a KA24E tach with your KA24DE. Both wires are yellow with a red stripe. I've had a single cam tach in my dohc for a while now works fine with that small modification.

Tried this out using your write up and it didn't work. The two wire white plug green/white and red/black. The green is hooked up but where does the red/black one go? Also on the black nx plug it has two yellow/green wires and both are used so which goes where?

Depends on the year of the NX you got the cluster out of, you need to check on the back of the cluster where each pin goes because almost all of them are labeled on the printed board/flat wire on the back of the cluster. I think after 91 they are slightly different in the pin out.

You know where I could find the pigtail. I've had my gauges from my nx2000 from a while back but didn't get the wires.

My bad, I could have worded that a bit better, I meant to say distributor wiring. But I do think your being a bit too harsh. Would you like to give us some insight on how to make it work for a singe cam?
