battle of the ebay catbacks
Well after doing much searching i have decided to do some serious ebay shopping as I need a complete exhaust system. I have narrowed it down to 2 catbacks, one is a knock off of the apexi/ssac dual muffler
89-94 S13 240SX CAT BACK DUAL TIP EXHAUST SYSTEM 90 91 :eBay Motors (item 230353970419 end time Sep-01-09 17:24:22 PDT) and the other is the more traditional can type. 89-94 Nissan 240SX S13 Cat-Back catback Exhaust System:eBay Motors (item 270356570202 end time Aug-07-09 18:05:17 PDT) I am leaning more towards the dual muffler right now. just wondering if anyone either of these exhausts and what they think. Any video clips of sound would be very helpful. BTW I still have my KA24E and i am surprised how nice some exhausts sound with this motor |

i used to have a ebay exhaust similar to that can one and the fitment was shit.. you had to choose between having it like 2 inches off the ground or if you tucked it up so it wasnt low it would leak

^ I agree. I used to subscribe to the "it's just a pipe" mentality, but the ebay exhaust I have rattled against the bottom of the car until one of the mounts broke off.

i have an apexi n1 noir and with a car thats dropped 3 inches my exhaust is still even with the frame rail, ebay isnt worth it, wait for a special on here for something legit, i got my n1 off of a special on here for 500 shipped about a year ago if you wait and take your time you can find good deals

err....an ebay exhaust will be fine.
i use to have the one can one, it fit perfect. i had no problems with it. i was looking at an apexi n1 exhaust though. i wanted to actually see the badge on it, and i picked it up by the hanger. the hanger cracked, and almost broke off. |

but it seems a bit pricey for just an exhaust....or is that how much they really are? i'd take the dual one.
how much more would it be if i made my own exhaust? i'd need 3 inch piping, a flow master muffler, and then maybe use another muffler at the cat. |

Do not get the dual one. They are terrible. Even the 'real' dual Apexi is terrible.
I had this one, which is pretty much the cheapest Ebay catback you can get, and it was pretty awesome. 89 90 91 92 93 94 NISSAN 240 SX SE N1 CATBACK EXHAUST:eBay Motors (item 360165534123 end time Aug-24-09 16:37:14 PDT) |

Get a real cat-back. Usually with ebay products the fitment is off and you end up having a headache just to try to make it fit. There was a blitz nur spec for the s13 in the forsale forums not too long ago. I'd go with that.

The whole point of ebay is so you don't pay 500 for an exhaust, when the time comes for my swap I will get some name brand stuff, the only thing i am going to keep will be whatever cat I end up getting.
thanks for all your help guys, anything will be an improvement from my current setup, the guy i bought my car from even welded the bolts on the header so I can't even seperate my headers, the rest of the exhaust is a straight pipe to a rusted muffler...can someone say ghetto rig? so even an ebay header will be better than my current loud raspy noise comming from a rusted muffler lol |

I would get the cheapest one you can find, then pick out a muffler you like, and chop and weld. It's cheaper than getting a full custom, which won't look as good either.

my dad has that dual tiped ebay one on his 14 and it sounds soo bitchen with a kade... buuutttt the fitment IS soo off.. even after 60+ dollars of custom hanger work from my local muffler shop... the mid muffler in the system is just WAY to low.... and also to add we took the system off and pounded the living CRAP out of the top of that mid muffler where it was hitting the drive shaft after we tucked the system up as high as it would go and it still rubs under compression braking.......his car is barley droped on 18s and it still scraps on steep drives... but it was on the car when he got it and hes saving up for a better system in the future....
so my imput on the ebay is dont buy it unless your ready to fork over extra cash to get the fitment down and also be ready to beat on your new shiny exaust system with a hammer so it don't rub on the other hand i just pulled my full turbo cat back system off my 13 and replaced it with a full stock cat back (used system picked up off zilvia for 50$)and a supper turbo muffler by cherry bomb (VERY cheap price like 32 a muff or so) i cut the stock muller off and had it welded in place of the stock by my local muff dealer and just added a straight black tip and its sounds very quite very deep tone i can hear the AEM intake open up on my ka24de very nice very sleeper and still great performance and best of all i did it supper cheap..... oh and my cars SUPPER slammed on 15s and i drag frame rails on the daily and my exaust RARELY touches the ground |

Don't get the stupid ass dual muffler, shit is super ricey and the exhaust scrapes EVERYWHERE.
Real Apex'i N1 dual or not, the design of that exhaust SUCKS unless you're still in 1998 and rocking an S13 with shocks and springs and cool race stickers with no real mods. I would rather buy a USED real exhaust than an ebay one, but whatever. If you're poor do what you gotta do.

Yeah I definitely don't want a ricey sound, I looked at the ssac ones and they look exactly like the ebay ones, looks like the chinese manufacturers copied them, or more likely they make the ssac ones and they just slap a badge on it or whatever.
Like jamg said, mufflers are all basically the same if they are 3" piping, you can't really fuck it up, if the muffler sounds like shit ill just cut and weld one. But what I am looking for is something that will just work, not be sliding all over the asphalt and sound decent. Frankly I don't need name brand notoriety, not right now, not in the budget. If I had stacks of $1000 lying around then sure i would....but I am shopping on ebay so that should tell you where my budget is.......my main concern is fittiment and I have heard things good and bad about the exhaust fitting properly so I don't know what to believe, keep in mind i have an s13 and supposedly these exhausts are made to fit that chassis. Anyone know of something that is SURE to fit without smashing anything with a hammer to make it fit lol. Last thing I need with this car is another headache or something that should be simple and becomes a project. |

you knwo what alot of us here is SoCal do now.............
We run pure stock exhaust with bone stock mufflers. shit is cheap. cant get tickets. One less thing they can pull you over for. saves your hearing (really, look up truckers ear, 20% plus hearing loss from wind and mufflers.) fits nice. saves money. and if you do happen to slide corners, step on the throttle or anything like that.........Its much more quite. Only the wheel squeel can give you away at 3am. Plus, you dont wake the nieghborhood everytime you go somewhere at night. So go bone stock now, or 3 years from now when whats new, hits your town. |
