Charges were dropped because the cops and DA knew they were wrong. If you read the police report the cop wrote that the suspect "appeared" to be the owner of the house. If Gates had stayed in the house ,they would have to get a warrant. When they called in for the warrant they would have verified who the owner was and told the officer to leave .

I disagree.

The charge they used on the Harvard Proff. are BS charges that really only get used when a officer want to arrest someone and has nothing to arrest them for.
The charge is totally the officers opinion.
And in this case, the police department decided there is no way its holding up in court.

Agreed! Even though he was quick at the mouth (I would be pissed myself after proving that I'm the home owner), the original charge would NOT hold up well in court and would make for a great lawsuit.

It's not hard to imagine at some point we all get fed up police in one situation or another.

regardless of whether or not you think the Prof was in the wrong,
the guy is perfectly entitled to express his disagreement.
being somehow more well-off doesn't mean you lose the right to question the authorities.

We might not all care, but I'd wager the media thinks there are enough out there who do.
Otherwise it wouldn't even be in the news.
Just looking at the # of hits on this thread alone, I'd say the media isn't that far off.

If you guys haven't figured this out by now, police aren't there to serve and protect as their motto so clearly portrays, the are in place to maintain control and protect social order. Sick of getting harassed, get over it. If the cop has any reason to dislike you, ie he sees you as a "negro, punk kid, etc etc", it just makes it that much worse for you.

I can see that but the white in me doesn't feel that way. I guess I get to see it from both perspectives.

It really sucks to be the one getting shitted on because of the color of your skin(either way). I guess I just wish people would take each person on an individual basis instead of as an ambassador for a stereotype.
