KA stock ka-e cuts out at 3500 rpm

i was driving on the freeway and i was in 5th gear at around 3500/3600 rpms the engine cuts out.
it wont go anymore until i push the clutch in and then release it again,or when i let the rpm's go back down below 3000rpm
it will only happen in 5th gear and right around 3500 rpm.
any ideas of what to look at? any suggestions will help
thank you

my 89 coupe had the same problem when i first got it. I think it had something to do with 1 of the trans sensors... maybe 5th gear or speedometer wire.

i checked the maf and it works fine
and yes it only happens in 5th gear...trans could be a possibility
could it have something to do with egr? because i am cruising with the CEL off and i get it up to 3500 and then it cuts out and then the engine light turns on. i check the code and it says egr

Is EGR the only code you got?

EGR shouldn't effect that.

yeah just the egr code would show
isnt there a fuel shutoff if the egr is closed past a certain rpm?

today i was driving and the cel was off,so i tried to get rpm's up to see if it would do it and right at at 3500 it shut off and the cel came on again.then it smelt real weird
...5 mins later the cel turned off so i tried it again and it went up to 4000 rpm with no problem. (all of this was in 5th gear)
