Good way to profit
Not really a business but something I've been comtemplating to do for a bit of cash. OK so a couple of days ago I went out of state and while I was there I noticed people just through away their aluminum cans. I asked how much they sell for a pound here and they said 20-25cents a pound. Where I sell them I get near 2.10 a pound. I go over there and buy them for say 50 cents a pound and come back over here and sell them.
I figure I'll need atleast a ton a trip to make it worthwhile. 50Cents x 2000LB = 1000$ Spent 1.50 x 2000LB = 3000$ Total 3000 - 1000 for buying them = 2000 2000 - 500 for gas = 1500 1500$ profit! I spend about 1,500$ total and 1,500$ profit. Not bad for about 4 days right? Housing would be free I hope I got relatives heh. And thats at 1.50$ a pound where over here it usually sells for about 2.xx$ Good idea or no? Would there be any problems?

But iirc there are laws and regulations in the scrap metal business. I'd check into that first. |

Well I thought it was a good Idea, I don't think a couple grand is worth a 20 year sentence. Might be more lenient on a minor but, I wouldn't risk it anymore after reading that.

Well if you have relatives in that state, have them save all of their cans and then go get them and sell them and give them some of the profit.

it is not illegal to pick up cans off the side of the road and cash them in. not as glorious and a little more work, but there is no cost in aquiring these cans and you profit while helping with pollution

There was some hobo back in the 90's who did this (I forget which city) and started clearing like $250,000 per year at it.
If it works, go ahead and do it. Start on a fairly small scale first, and remain that while your profits will rise with volume, certain fixed expenses like the gas won't really go up as you grow the business, at least not proportionally. Sounds good, actually. I have a lot of "side ventures" and I'm always looking for something new. |

The way to do it is go to your local college tailgate partys and pick up cans.
Kids do it all the time at the michigan games. Make some good money at a young age if your ambitious.

If anyone read the article, it mentions on key point.
They were turning in NON-REDEEMABLE cans to states as REDEEMABLE. THAT is an offense, but if your cans are kosher, keep that hustling up. |
