I was talking to my grandfather today who owns a body shop in los angeles, before they left my house i mentioned using the shop to paint my car soon and he said that in july of 08 (next month) shops are to be using new water basted paints (new law), has anyone else heard about this?

base coat are water base, but the clear is still the same as far as i know. Doesnt make too much sense if the clear is still the same old stuff.

I've heard that, in some areas. its about air-quality I think.. pretty funny considering they probably account for <1% of it. I think water based paints are alot better than they used to be. (they used to be garbage)

i hear there better now aswell, but i dont think we should be forced to use it since its still kinda good and not better than what we already have. Xcede can you provide any information on why paint shops are forced to changing? Im just curious if its government related.

no i believe it will be mandated in janurary. The only thing changin is urathane base coats are going to be changed in to water base. The clear coat will stay since they allready have vey low V.O.C. level so epa doesn't care about them. It will be required every state should have them by 09. Cali and washinton are first to change since they both have the most strict voc laws. States like louisiana, mininnosta and those kinds of places are allowed to spray crap 2x the amount the voc's. They get a better choice of paints at a better price.

Your not gonna be forced to use it but you will be fined if your cuaght by the epa spraying it in your shop. I think like 1,500 fine and up. I like the idea of water base paints. Its slightly more expensive and holy shit its so much easier to spray and the colors come out even better. You guys are gonna see better pignments and colors come out of the factory for our car. With bater base paints u can basicaly paint a mid size car in about 35 min. Fully dried and cured. I might be taking a class on water base painting this fall being held by my teacher who certified in water based paint with sherwin william. He told us its going to revolutionize painting. So i give props to ur grandpa for getting on this early. Hes gonna need new guns, either new booth or upgrade with special heat lamps and some other stuff.

alot of the euro paint makers already use water based paint..

spraying it is pretty easy... less air and more material... i doubt if the booths and new guns need to be bought...the system in most shops are pretty adequate...

some of the guns need to be stain less steel to protect again corrosion in the needles of the spray guns. You do need a special heat gun or lamp to dry it right. I've heard this stuff you can spray real fast and up close and not run easily. From what i know is u need either an upgrade for ur paint booth or a whole new booth made for it.

I was talking to my paint people yesterday as my car is going in soon to get paint. There are two basic problems with Water based paint that need to be figured out and have not been. First is no one has this paint in stock as of right now. Second is heat based drying is being outlawed as well which basically means you have to air dry. This is a problem because it means more shit can get in the paint and have to be sanded out.
Now with those two things stated, I should also add that the state will allow the shop to paint with Chroma base as long as its purchased before the beginning of July. Shops with the paint and the jobs will be allowed to spray till January 1st 2009.
Why is this being done, someone who put together a bill that the Governator signed for more environmentally correct shit managed to tack this provision onto it.

yeah on that air dryng thing i know there is a special air-drying gun you need to dry it since it acts like regualar water. No more solvments. LIke i was saying ur gonna need new booths or upgrade with these air dryers. Sherwin williams i think has them out allready. I my class this fall(in 2 months) i'll be given a gallon of it to practice with. Hope fully i can do my car with it and give my feed back on it. Its the reason why put my car painting on hold.

Why is heat drying being outlawed? Does it cause global warming? Forest fires? As an environmentally aware person, should I support outlawing hot tubs?

probley being out lawed to make you buy a new booth or so you have to upgrade for water borne paint.

booths are expensive... real expensive.... most paint guns are already stainless or alluminum..... no corosion... well maybe the internals if they use a brass needle..... my gun is stainless already ...so im not gonna buy a new fucken 400 dollar paint gun...when this one works great... as far as heating go... some shops have shitty booths and they prefer to run like a gas heater...because it helps to bake fast vs runing numerous heat lamps... and its cheaper then running up your electricity bill.... water based paint... ok.. air dry that fine.. more fucken time to flash before u throw on more coats or clear... and when u clear you better be able to use some sort of heating.. because it runs easily if you dont get the air temp up....
