trouble restarting car

just bought the car and have this problem, changed the battery and the headlights work so it can't be the battery could it? usually on the first start up(aliitle lag) it starts and maybe the 2nd-3rd in a row but on the 4th or so the car won't start. i exprienited this because i got stuck at the gas station, after trying for the 10th start, i waited at the gas station for about 10 minutes and retried and the car started. i though nothing of it but it happened again so i don't want this to happen again. any suggestions?

Check your ignition switch...specifically the START position on the switch. You'll need a multi-meter/voltmeter to check it. Ignition switches are known to go out on 240's.

yeah, head is right...again.... if the car is turning over than i doubt its ur ign switch.

if car wont start only when hot try this for a quick diagnosis. when its hot and wont start, pull 2 injector plugs out and try to start. if car starts/stumbles better than before (of course after it stumbles/starts it will run crappy, but if it gets that far u have gained some knowledge about ur problem)ur motor is flooding.

thanks for the help. its a stock 89. this happens when it cold or hot. you can hear the little click sound when trying to start it. could it be the starter or alterator? i think i have leaky injectors because i can sense gas every now and then and have poor gas mileage. garage: if it is that, what is it flooding of?

flooding during only during hot is limp home scenario... sounds more like u got low voltage problems or high amperage draw problem. voltage = batt or alt or belt. amp = starter, other= ground or 12vline

load tester on the batt would help u diagnose, also a voltmeter to check if alternator is charging, lines/grounds are good etc.

and im taking it u dont have a clamp/field type amp meter so if all else checks out id take it to parts house to get starter checked.

sorry to bring this up again but had any one have this happening: 1-2 lag second on start up(cranking/generating), time doesn't come on for 2-3 second, dim for first second then turns on like it is rejuvenated- everytime i open the door the time turns off and resets.
