350z ECU year matter for smog check?

Hi everyone,

I've recently purchased a 2006 350z with a non-revup motor from a 2003-2004 Z. The older non revup motors do not have variable exhaust valve cams and so do not have the sensor hookups for those. As a result, I have a CEL for those sensors that are nonexistent on the motor I am running.

One way I can get rid of all the CEL codes is by replacing my current 2006 ECU with one from a 2003-2004 350z.

My question is, would the smog system recognize that the ECU I am running is for a 2003/2004 350z rather than a 2006? I ask because California law does not permit the use of an older motor in a newer car, despite being from the same car. Looking forward to hear what you guys think, thanks!

350z never came rev up, they only came de and hr, only g35 came rev up. Your probably running a g35 ecu, just pick up a 350z Ecu any year before the hr and you'll be fine

The 06 has a rev-up motor which yes, is still a de, but with different cams and variable exhaust cam timing compared to the 03-04 which did not have that function. The reason I asked is because the 06 ecu needs the sensors to allow for variable exhaust timing and when it doesn't get a signal it throws a CEL (my 03-04 motor doesn't have the sensors for, hence the CEL).

So my question is, 2003/2004 ecu in a 2006 model - will the smog system have an issue with that even though they are all technically vq35de's?
