Post Another Cheap FR Sports Car? Nissan joins the fray

Japan's top two auto makers have a long and sordid history of ripping off each other's successful designs. No sooner had the Nissan Cube become a run away success in its home market than Toyota came up with the similarly boxy bB (Scion xB). Many years earlier, after the Toyota HiLux Surf (4Runner) proved a hit with, well, surfers, Nissan restyled their Terrano with nigh on identical lines, hoping to ride on the coattails of the Toyota. And let's not get in to the Supra vs. Z and Celica vs. Skyline wars.

Now, just weeks after confirming that Toyota does indeed have a successor to the lauded AE86 in the pipeline, Best Car magazine claims to have evidence that Nissan has got a team working on building a new Silvia. Like the final 2002 S15 Spec R Silvia the new car is reckoned to be powered by a turbocharged two-liter good for 247 HP, but will just be 10 kgs heavier at one and a quarter metric tons (2450lbs).

The new range should sell for between 2.5 and 2.8 million Yen ($21,000 - $23,700), but not until 2010. Best Car's scoop ties in nicely with photographs of a shortened Z, most likely a mule testing a new, smaller FR drive train, taken at the ring earlier in the summer. If the new Silvia is indeed to be based on a modified Z/Skyline LM platform, expect a similar wheelbase of 8' 6", but smaller overall dimensions, around 14' 4" long by 5' 8" wide.
Chances of Nissan bringing a concept car, possibly derived from the URGE shown in Detroit last year, to October's Tokyo Motor Show? 60-percet according to the magazine.

The roof line looks like a 1st gen eclipse, the ass looks like a civic, and the heads look kind of like that from a celica. The worst of all worlds??? WTF is going on?! Thank god these are only concept photos, haha...

The news is new. People can deny that these cars are coming, but it's true. There are a half dozen cars that have been confirmed that the manufactures are working on in the RWD coupe segment.

Im just stoked as all hell to see some buzz around affordable RWD cars these days. It will give me a nice option between the Fuji/Toyota or this new Nissan, dont think Id buy the Hyundai tho will be interesting.

but will just be 10 kgs heavier at one and a quarter metric tons (2450lbs)
they screwed up the conversion 1.25 metric tons = 1250kg = 2756lbs which is still pretty light but its not under 2500lbs

whoever did that seemed to have mixed up US tons(2000lbs) and metric tons(1000kg)

^^^^^ I tend to agree, something that looks along the lines of the Altima coupe would be better. Given these choices I would take a 350z any day of the week instead.

For being a prototype I love it. It has massive potential. The bodystyle looks good to me so far. They just need to fix the rear and rooflines a little.

It IS just a concept car so if it goes into production it will be toned down quite a bit. And if it is going to keep the silvia name, it would probably be more based off the s15, than that ugly thing up top.

You would hope. Though you fail to realize that the S chassis series is dead. The new Silvia will be based off a current modern chassis series that Nissan builds now. The S chassis series is old tech. Yup face it our cars chassis's are no longer modern in the car world. In fact though its heavier the current Z chassis is a pretty damn amazing chassis. It handles like a chassis 600-700lbs lighter than it is. This is in part due to the amazing stiffness of it.
This is why a new Silvia would most likely be based off a shortened version of the same chassis series.

Yes and no.
Calling the S-chassis 'dead' isn't necessarily accurate - they can always revive the chassis name.
Sure, the S13 and S14/15 chassis designs are obsolete, but that doesn't mean the S-chassis hasn't continually done that since the original Silvia, onward to the S110, S12, and on...

I welcome a newly-designed S-chassis, even if it's a reworked Z chassis. It's still the FM platform, which falls in line with Nissan's business plan that's been going for years now.

I've claimed for years that I plan to NEVER buy a new car, simply because it's a poor economical decision... but a car like they're describing may get me to change that plan.

Well while it will be named Silvia I do not think it will have a S designation. In the past when Nissan has changed the essential chassis it has lost the chassis series designation while retaining the namesake of the car. To give you a classic example of what I am talking about look no further than the Z aka Fairlady. The Z32 and Z33 are in no way related to the S30 chassis series that did run up into the 80's but was killed at the end of that decade. I.E.the s series chassis variation that was the Z was ended though the S series chassis that was the Silvia went on). Yes the Silvia chassis designation ran for an extremely long time but that was due in part to the fact that the chassis series itself was ahead of times when it was first concepted in the early sixties. The Fairlady was also in fact derived off that chassis series as well.
Though Nissan has completely come up with new chassis designations for all their cars do not doubt it will be the same with the New Silvia.
That said I welcome the reintroduction of a Silvia as I feel its a market segment Nissan should not ignore. You may have misconstrued my setiments about this. Its not that I do not welcome this its that given above stated facts Nissan would not make a S16. Its also that I feel the current projected look does nothing for me taste wise, again which is why I stated that the Z has a much stronger pull on me.

Using your same logic, the Z33 should have had a different designation because it shares nothing with the z32. I'm willing to bet if Nissan released a new silvia/240, it will have a s-chassis designation.
