Conan O'Brien Scores $32.5 Mil from NBC

Conan O'Brien is losing "The Tonight Show" but he'll be getting a $32.5 million consolation prize courtesy of NBC ... sources tell TMZ.

In return, we've learned Conan has agreed to sit on the bench until September. Translation -- he can't host another show until the fall.

In addition to the $32.5 mil, we've learned NBC is also paying severance to Conan's "Tonight Show" employees. In all, we're told NBC's payout is around $40 million.

But Conan probably won't see close to the $32.5 mil. Under the deal, any money Conan makes during the remaining contract period with NBC will offset the network's obligation. So, if Fox were to make a deal with Conan and pay him $25 mil during the NBC contract period, Conan would only score $7.5 mil from NBC.

One well-placed NBC source told us something surprising -- looks like NBC may keep its intellectual rights. So Conan can't take his creations -- such as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and the Masturbating Bear -- to his next gig.

We're told the Conan/NBC deal still isn't completely done, but it's very close.

I bet the majority of Conan's fans are mostly the younger ADD crowd that like Southpark, etc. That's fine, it's simply preference.

Jay has quite a # of years earning pretty high ratings for NBC. He's also got a kick ass collection of cars. He also layed the smack down on Kanye! He doesn't really make people look stupid.. they just fucking are! ahhaah, but yeah he can get pretty mean spirited.

Harvard education is supposed to be a prerequisite for comedy? ... and depending on when he was writing for SNL, that could work against him LOL! But I don't doubt it was in its better years--same can be said for Simpsons.

As far as SNL. It depends on your view. He has 3 Emmy's for the '89, '90, and '91 seasons. That had Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Dennis Miller, Mike Myers, Kevin Nealon, Chris Farley, Tim Meadows, Chris Rock, Julia Sweeney, Al Franken, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, David Spade and Robert Smigel.

And about his SNL/Simpsons gig, like I said, didn't doubt it was during their better --read BEST-- years. Those shows have gone down the toilet, but SNL looks to be picking up some steam again since Fey/Fallon have left. Simpsons needs to be desperately put out of its misery.

Point is moot. If Conan is as talented as everyone makes him out to be, he'll do fine on another network. I can agree it sucks to get bent over like that, but what's the big deal anyway? Just means Leno will fail again when he moves back to his old time slot, and Conan will have the last laugh.

Fans are just mad that Conan and his staff where done dirty. They promised him the Tonight Show (which is supposed to be something you do for YEARS) and had everyone uprooted from NY to LA. Then they just did an about face. Grimey...

After the first break he went to the front of the floor and started giving high-fives and hand shakes to a couple people here and there but when he came over to where i was i stood up and screamed with my hand out then he looked at me shook my hand and then mocked my scream back at me, i was laughing so hard! yeah they usually fill up quick but you can always go wait it out in the stand by line. They let in a lot of people who didnt get tickets off the site, but you only got two more days to go.

Is anyone else tired of NBC? I swear they create so much drama the should merge with TNT because they know drama right? I remember when they screwed Norm Macdonald out of his job because he kept making fun of OJ. Leno needs to step down, Conan is genius, and fallon sucks and needs to earn his cred on late night like Conan did for all those years.

Conan's show last night killed me when he had PeeWee Herman on talking shit about NBC and their fucking peacock.
