I've been searching exclusively for a 240 for quite some time now, but lately an 87-88 5.0 has caught my eye. I know, I know, I'm not too fond of going to the darkside of domestics either. Just that finding a decent 240 is difficult around here.
Now as I see it: Advantages: -Massive power (~225 hp, 300 torque) -RWD -Naturally aspired with available choice for superchargers in the future - Since it's a domestic, parts and mods will be cheap - And best of all, the SOUND of a V8 Disadvantages: - Heavier (I think somewhere around 2900-3000 lbs.) *Edit: Just found out it's actually just below 2850 lbs. Not bad. - So so handling - Questionable reliability - Fuel costs due to V8 I just wanted to know if anyone has ever owned or knows someone who owns a 5.0 stang. If so, I would be very interested in your opinions on it relating to reliability, performance, running costs, enjoyment, etc. Thanks in advance for any help.

the 302 is my favorite sounding engine if you bought one, there would be so much support and knowledge from a lot more people. and if you live in a place like i do, there are more domestic performace shops that know what they're doing, rather than the vinyl sticker/body kit peformance shops. sometimes i wish i got a mustang.

Indeed, I love that aggressive sound. But quite frankly, I'm afraid of the reliability factor, as I've heard mixed opinions. I mean, if something breaks down I'm sure I can grab something from a junkyard pretty easily, right? What about emissions? Are they easy to pass emissions with (Ontario, Canada specifically)?

I have owned a few Fox body stangs. 3 to be exact. 2 90's and 1 93. All 5.0s of course. They are great cars. I love the 5.0, one of my fav engines. As far as reliability, well not to bad at all really. Just make sure you get one thats been maintained and it will run strong for awhile. As far as gas milage goes, well not that bad either, I saw as high as 26 mpg in mine once. But on avg it was about 18. and thats with my heavy foot.
If you cant find a 240 then a 5.0 would be a fun car, I actually miss mine somtimes, I mean how could you not miss 300ft/lbs . But I did sell it to get a 240. I love hoe the 240 handles though, feels much better than the solid axle stang, just needs more power. All in all, I say go with whatever you what. I mean both are great I think, and its easier to get power out of the 5.0 than it is a 4cyl. But not as easy to make the 5.0 handle like a 240. Tough choice. I might own another 5.0 someday, put a nice 347 stroker with an S/C setup....
