Ignition and starting Woes.

So,
This is my "start button" as installed by the previous owner.

It is wired DIRECTLY to the starter.
I have NO clue why.
So the starter will always turn no matter where the key is.

The plug is still on the starter, a wire goes to a spade connecter that is plugged into the starter plug. The other wire goes into a weird fuse setup and into the battery.

I was told it was like that because the switch on the ignition went out.
Which made sense at the time because if I put the key in and turn it all the way over I got NO click, NO anything...

So I just put a new switch on the ignition, I turned it over to start and I got a click under the dash!!! I checked the fuse for the start signal in the fuse box, I got under the car and plugged the starter into the plug on the harness, turned the key over to start, got the click under the dash but NO starter at all.
Am I missing something? what else should I check?

Any help would be appreciated, I really need go get rid of this stupid start button so I can move on to the next problem with the car.

Im gonna attempt to clean the contacts on the start connecter that is attached to the harness.. after that I have no idea what to check..

Clutch switch is good, ignition wont click without the clutch being at the bottom.
Fusible link is good.
Starter is good because if I plug the female spade back into the starter plug the car will still start.

I might be confused here, but do you have a starter relay located in the front-right side of the engine bay? (Blue, and fails sometimes)

Anyway, it sounds as if a starter relay is not engaging the starter solenoid. Good thing getting rid of that fuse and installing a fusable link. One easy test is to engage the starter button and have a friend tap on that relay. Sometimes that will tell you if that relay is bad. But with the wiring work someone did to your car, it might not even be correctly wired up in the first place.
