I recently hooked up an Alpine CDE-121 in my 1991 Nissan 240sx. While i was wiring the stereo I also realized how much the previous owners had messed with the factory wiring. it appears as if everything is still there though. I also got new speakers but when I power up the head unit I get no sound from the speakers. Any idea what it might be? I've checked the connections and the ground is good

1. You did not fix anything by ghettoing your shit together with wire nuts.

2. If you hooked everything up correctly, you'd have sound coming out of your speakers

3. A new aftermarket deck and speakers warrants new speaker wire capable of carrying the output of the deck. OEM 240SX 20+yr old wiring is not sufficient for this.

4. Have you tried a CD, iPod or other media besides the radio? If not, did you hook up the antenna?

5. Undo the twisty wire nuts that are made for house wiring and use environmental splices or solder w/heat shrink to connect your wires... Better yet, they make harness adapters (Alpine to Nissan etc) that make installation idiot-proof- get one of those too. Check continuity with a multimeter.

You must have wired the speakers to the factory amp.
Find the power wire for the factory amp or bypass the oem amp, and wire speakers to directly to the head unit.

1. It's really not ghetto, I understand the wire nuts are used for houses but i've used them in the past and they've worked completely fine. they also make it easier to remove the radio/wire harness if i ever want to.

3. i didnt think i would have to run new speaker wire for a new headunit as long as the original wire is still there and intact

4. the antenna is hooked up. I have tried both the radio and multiple CD's

5. I have the harness adapters that fit alpine to nissan already wired with the stereo. i dont have a voltmeter to test with. i guess i'll get one

Depending on if the vehicle was factory amplified, you cant just wire in a deck and expect it to work. Two things will happen, One more than likely those extra plugs would run to the factory amp and give it a on/off signal as well as any additional input for the speakers. Second you cant send an amplified signal(such as the deck) to an amplifier.
So what you can do is start by tracing continuity from the door speaker wires to the wires on the plugs.
If the deck is brand new then you shouldnt have to do this, but you could also test the deck to make sure its functioning properly by temporarily hooking up a speaker. just wire it straight to one of the output signals.
