tranny's SOHC vs DOHC
i hear that the major difference is that i need to use a sohc clutch and flywheel with a sohc tranny. Is this true? Are these not interchangeable? Also what would be the disadvantages of using the sohc tranny?

You heard wrong...they are mechanically interchangebale.
Sensors/plugs are different, and the later year model trans have more sensors (and a different speed sensor)...but ANY S13/S14 KA24 trans works on ANY KA24 motor. Clutch and flywheel should match the motor. - Brian

I think the only reason why many don't use an SOHC tranny with a DOHC motor is because they don't 'think' they will work because of the motor difference. On the other hand, the DOHC tranny's do usually have less mileage (Relatively speaking).

people do that!?!?!?OMG how could they! i would think it shouldnt matter which transmission you use if your getting one for a replacement. Just find one with low miliage....or just rebuild.

I had an SOHC tranny in my S14 for about a year. There are a few minor differences mechanically. Mostly they are insignificant, however the DOHC trannys have "ribbing" or "webbing" cast into the casing to make the case stronger. Other than that it was already mentioned that a few of the sensors are different.
