difference between heater cores from 96 to 97?

my car is a 97 s14. it has a swap and Ive never had the valve on the firewall thats used to shut off coolant flow to the heater core. I recently bought one from a junkyard car and it was from a 95. This valve works with a cable that actuates it, which runs from the bottom of the heater core, out the firewall, and to the valve. When i wasnt able to find a clear spot on my firewall to run the cable through, i called my friend with his 98 and had him bring it over to see how his is run. he has the valve on his firewall, however there is no cable whatsoever and the valve is different, and does not have a mount for a cable at all. How does the 97+ coolant system differ from the 95 & 96? Ive already swapped to a 95 heater core, so i suppose drilling a hole for the cable would be all thats necessary?
thanks
-Alex
