Most likely you confused the neutral position switch and the reverse switch in your gearbox / wiring.

there are only 2 sensors : neutral and reverse . And they are just switches. just switch the plugs and you are done (chances are the sensors have been switched as i believe the plugs are not the same)

They both should be on the side on the transmission.

There are more then two sensors. If you cant start your car after you swap these sensors around or can only do so in reverse that means that the issue is not in these sensors. You could have a short in the wiring for your reverse lights.

Here is a good pictures with labels.
Swap around 1 and 4 and see if that solves your issues.

EDIT: I reread your post and noticed they said its at red lights, is it only at reds? If so that for sure isn't those sensors and could be a short. That crappy bulb holder setup has a tendency to melt if you put to high wattage bulbs and all kinds of strange things happen.

Wow, I'm reviving this thread almost 7 years later lol

so I just realized I never fixed my reverse light issue back in 2012

the reverse lights come on when I'm in 4th gear instead of reverse

do I just have the sensors plugged in wrong?

It sounds like you have your reverse light circuit connected to your fourth gear switch. You may also have your fourth gear circuit wired to your reverse light switch. I can't remember for sure but I think the connectors for both of these switches are the same.

back from the dead, yet again.
