The enthusiast base for the 240 has changed over the last few years.
I don't really go to meets or anything anymore, just because I'd rather do other things with my night, and they don't hold the same excitement for me as they did when I first got my first 240.

Think about how many things in this pic would be considered wrong today, but were fine back then (keep in mind the midwest lagged a couple years behind SoCal). (I'm the one on the left if you were wondering.)

Sileighty. Springs, not coilovers. Japanese license plate. "JDM poses". bad offset, monster truck ride height. Totally stock suspension with an SR20.
But it was a lot more fun back then.


I still like 240's but one of the main draws they had on me back then were that they were unique, and no one had them. (See my sig) Mine was the only SR swap in Detroit at the time as far as I know. At the huge tuner car meet every friday night, I had the only S13.
I had people coming up and asking what it was all the time.
There are always going to be innovators and bandwagen jumpers no matter what you are into.

It's the reason you saw so many o.g. people move on from 240's.
If it weren't such a good drift platform, I would have by now too.
There are always going to be people who wish to stand out and those who wish to fit in. Of course the extroverts are going to continue to want to stand out, so you see them selling their 240s and buying something new and exciting and starting all over again.

Back then the 240 enthusiasts were much closer knit and friendly. There were a higher concentration of older guys who had been into them, and willing to share knowledge.
But many of these guys have left, and there are many more 240's in the hands of thuggish rubbish trying to look hard while driving their farting slammed S13's with black steelies.
These are the guys who if you try to talk to or give a wave to on the freeway, they just stare you down. So there's not the friendly atmosphere there once was. They are also responsible for police stereotyping 240 owners as street racers which leads to further animosity.
So it really shouldn't surprise anyone that the "scene" (I hate that word) has changed.

i rember going to the local rice shop in about 99-2000 and seeing what they had for the car, they could get sprint lowering springs they had to order thats it.

but to me the people that love the sport will stay and the kids will leave when its not cool anymore, if you cant tell its allready dieing down a lil

Agreed 100%. Just the other day, the traffic was light, it was late, so another 240 and me had some fun at a stop light. I beat on him pretty hard... and the guy gave me the finger when he pulled up beside me again.

But cool guys are still out there, not to long before that the same thing happend, and this guy waved and followed me into a fast food joint and we chatted for a couple hours, and both happend to be planning to attend the same drift event soon, so we'll meet up again there most likely. Most of what people don't like now is the attitude that a lot of people in the "scene" have.

I got my first s13 in December of 2002. I bought it because it wasn't a Honda, and not too many people had it. I could give a rat's ass about the other people who drive the same car, because it's what I wanted, and I didn't follow no "trend."

I hang out with people who drive all sorts of different cars. I mean it's cool to chill with people with the same type of cars, but who really cares? Just like how some people have "teams." To me, that's pretty :ghey:, but that's my own personal opinion. I would rather be around people with 240s, don't get me wrong, but this whole thing about the scene, c'mon now. Do what the fuck you like. Every car community will evolve in some way, in a good or bad way, it's inevitable.

the scene started as shitty and stock.


Then it toyed around with modification, never really taking anything seriously, never really becoming anything great. It was good though, in a cute retared way. Everyone could goto meets and laugh because no one was serious, I mean just look at the cars! No one had any serious game.

Then the scene got older, got more money, got more serious, gained popularity. Oh it's pretty, modifications abound.

But it wasn't authentic. It was almost "faking the funk". All show and no go. A bunch of talk, no walk. Pretty but a virgin. No soul. Everyone would pose and act hard about it (I'd post some of Austin but I can't get on MySpace at work), like their shit was tight, but it is exactly what it looks like. A pretty community, members acting hard, but no one doing shit.

That's about where I think Austin thinks the "scene" is now.

Luckily, like Austin, once something becomes popular and they're not special anymore, they move on.

Sorry Austin, you're a pal, but you're being a hypocrite here.

Ugh. It's a fucking car, people. And it's a cheap, ugly car too. It's available to about anyone in the world for spare change. Some of them are older than the fucking people driving them. They're beat. What do you expect? A bunch of high class educated college students to be driving them?

My view?

I bought my car because it's a cheap as fuck racing platform. I love the community, and by community I speak about the "cheap-car-drifting-track-or-doing-something-special" community. The people that are here to do something. I love that parts are cheap. I love that this inexpensive car is bringing a lot of young faces into motorsports, because this country is slowly trying to kill motorsports off, and I believe it's this community that will help keep it alive. The posers and the act hards? Whatever. They buy whatever is popular and get tired of it and move on. Let them. You never see any of them on this forum anyway.

**sidenote, not knocking Austins car, I love that thing, one of the cleanest hatches I knew. My car is a pile of shit in comparison.

agreed. track days are fun. imo it doesn't really matter whatever others drive, but as of lately i have seen a bit more 240's. as for 'meets' and shows, no comment. I'm not putting it down or anything, but I've never understood the appeal.

I think its the new kids with sponsorship from mom and dad who are changing the scene. Im guessnig most of the OGs ahd to work their asses off to get parts for their cars. That is why hyperteks progession was not as rapid as the kids seen nowadays. Also, these kids have little respect for elders seeing as how our cars are not as advanced at theirs. O well, times are changing. Lets move to off roading subarus!

I dont really see any "mom and dad" sponsorship cars. Maybe you could point out one for me. Most of the AMAZING 240's I see are hand built by dedicated owners. Let me know if any of these guys have mom and dad sponsors.

ha all I can say about this is at least you guys had/have a scene...north east theres no such thing...so I guess if you guys want to relive those early days you can all move out to New England and do it all over again. I think it is true what you guys are saying though Im relatively new to 240's compared to a lot of you guys...wish I was around for the old times cause it sounds fun...but at the same time im not opposed to car culture now, I think its true with any "scene" posers will get weeded out and the OG's will move on when its time

skylar you are forgetting glenn, norm, and chang bang and even nitin. long ago you had irwin and henry, the guys who sunk huge amounts of money into there cars. everyone would drool but you knew they wouldn't act like assholes on purpose. even the few meets I attended, you had the bbq which was why everyone showed. people didn't gripe about contributing a few bucks to cover the food bill. you could have alot of cars in a group on the road and police didn't care. most of the time they waved and we waved back. I remember when I saw how things were starting to change over when at the shine street meet some idiot showed up and did donuts then left. police came and harassed those who were there. for me I feel that the maturity level is not present as before. you didn't have as many people rev happy. you had people who came up and said hi. they did introductions then proceeded with the car chat. you didn't worry about hiding license plates and what not. square mile meets were great. i think back then it was like a hangout for those of all ages. now I rarely see anyone older show up. mainly just those going to high school, JCs, or those who are young and just working. meets were almost just sort of being family friendly. kinda like how hot rods meets are. regardless of how the cars were built you have the welcome atmosphere, now I know that really isn't present anymore. you have the diamond plaza meet still. but like the IE meets I never go because i know the ass-hatery that goes on just with the honda crowd and i know they just jump from honda to nissan. and onto the next fad. skylar is rite about track days tho. but im heading toward gripping and not drifting.

Hit up some of the meets, you can find kids with no jobs, fully built SRs talking about the honda they just beat. No joke. Ask them anything about their engines and they have no clue what they are talking about. Ask them where they got their money and they say their parents.

You may be right. I'm not familiar with any of those people, and sure meets sound like they were cool back in the day. But one of the main problems about today's "meet" community is these meets are horrible, unorganized and usually they are ILLEGAL as the cars are loitering and littering everywhere.

The meets I goto, well it all depends on which ones I goto.

TAB = A bunch of Hondas + the Supastar crew or whatever. The Honda's do burnout's all night and act hard. The supastar guys hang out with eachother and are pretty friendly, but the Honda guys just don't feel like introducing themselves. There's maybe one or two 240s there so I wouldn't really call that a goo judge of meet.

Diamond Plaza Meet - Maybe 6 cars show up on the nights I've been. 4 of them are usually me and my friends. The others almost seem to be people that were just at DP and saw us so they parked by us.

They come by and ask "who's car is this" and ask about mods and shit. It's friendly enough, but one of the problems is all these meets are at night, in a parking lot in west covina. Night time meets, I find, are inherantly ominous. People just don't talk to eachother as much because we can't fucking see who's who and don't know if they're shady mofo's or not.

I did goto a Toyota meet in Chino. Sunday afternoon, someone brought a grill, everyone was really fucking cool even though I'm a Nissan guy. It was at a park. No one did burnouts or anything because it's bright ass sunny day, we can see who you are, and you know not to act a fool.

I don't know where I'm going with this but basically here it is,

Someone START A MEET, a NISSAN MEET, IN THE DAY LIGHT. Let's do a Sunday meet. At a park or something. Come by and say hello. Shake hands. Turn your god damn radio down. Plan it ahead of time so people can make it. Maybe call the park coordinator and see if this is something we can do legally.

I think that's the problem. You kids are too damn lazy. No one would bring a grill. No one would call the park. No one would pay for Sodas for anyone but themselves. And no one would show up because they had to do X or cut Y or fuck Z.


**edit: Those kids, the mommy bought me an SR, they aren't changing the community because they aren't PART of it. What do they do for the community? Nothing. That's like saying all those old ladies driving around s13 coupes are hurting the community. Why? Who the hell are they? They don't do anything. They aren't on forums, they don't organize meets. They don't show up at events. If you use them to judge the community, you're wrong. Those douche bags have always existed, everywhere. Just ignore them.

^lol yeah its true i dont work right now....but thats why i cant buy anything for my car. and yeah alot of times it is like that. but you're just generalizing. i stopped at a gas station and there was a hatchback and we started chatting for like 15 min, or the other day i passed by a hatch looked over and said hey nice car and he replied the same. it really depends on the person because not everyone is like that. all the guys from the dp meet all work for their shit. (with maybe the exception of like 1 guy) but they are all cool as shit and no one revs there, no burn outs, no hate. and what because it's california no one works...come over here and then say that. its more like everyone works over here....shit i know kids who can actually say their parents are rich and still work. the only thing is that there are alot of kids out there that just buy stuff to be cool and "fix" up their cars and then crash because they cant really drive, or do something stupid and then make a bad name for people. its kinda like the honda scene...there are a lot of riced out honda's and there are a lot of honda owners that do stupid things. but, that doesnt mean that there aren't some nice looking, well done honda's and that they're arent some cool ass honda owners.

I went to a Honda D-Series meet - yeah, SOHC NA - at Griffith park with a Honda friend years ago. It was awesome - we grilled, drank 'refreshments' in cups, and played dodgeball. No attitude, no burnouts just a bunch of car people chilling.
I'd be down for something like that. I'd like to make the Diamond Plaza Meet because it sounds like fun and the people cool but I get up early to go to work and it's not just convenient. A saturday or sunday every other week or once a month would be perfect.
