When do you ship out, and aren't you at the age-limit that they don't activate from unless they're hard-up?

I just had a couple of friends that got activated from the reserve. Me being at headquarters Marine Corps won't go over because this is a non-deployable station [I really don't know how to feel about it though] Kinda happy 'cause no risk and no worry to the wife and daughter but missing out on the crazy times (and to use my training again)

Yeah or get turned into Hamburger by some general. Keep your as* in the seat were it won't get hurt for your Wife and kid. A dead dad is just that, dead.

The bad part is--you have to leave your friends and family for a while, and be out in the middle of nowhere.

But, the good part is--you get to be part of the brave men/women who are fighting to keep the world a safer place. so were you active at one time and went inactive reserve when you got out? or were you reserve the whole time and they just activated you and your unit? just curious and also what branch of service are you in?

i left the AF back in August and considered inactive reserver until 2006

me ex-gf (who i am still really good friends with) is in USMC reserves (supply) here in raleigh, but they haven't been activated yet (although they probably will be by march)... she is actually more likely to get sent to CA or get stuck finishing MCT and A-school @ Lejeune... (she finished @ PI on ~9-10 Jan)

Well, I report within the first week of next month, and it appears that they want me to go to Cherry Point, NC. That's absolutely retarded, considering I JUST got out in September from MCAS Miramar (which I'm 2 miles away from as I type this) and I was there for 2.5 years. Furthermore, my pregnant wife (also in the military here in SD) will have to be all by herself after giving birth if I have to go there.
Lastly, I'm the last living name-carrier for my family. If I die, my family name dies. (My wife is pregnant with a little girl).

Kevin,
Have faith in your training and keep moral up in your unit. Wether you are an NCO or not it is all service members duty to make the evironment as safe as possible. Things can get hectic during wartime situations but a cool head and confidence in your unit will keep things somewhat under control (as much as possible in an uncontrollable environment)

I feel for you guys going active... my active date is June 11 - I ship off to USN bootcamp at Great Lakes, Illinois...

Unfortunately/Fortunately I'll be in school for a while (NUKE) so I probably won't see much (if any) action, but if the need arises they'll send some of us half-trained recruits out to do some grunt work...

Is there anything you can do to see if you can be a "last call" or something like that? That you only go if they absolutely 100% need you? Because of your wife's condition? I don't know much about the military, so please don't flame me if these are totally absurd ideas.

When is your baby due? Congrats on getting a little girl! Hopefully your next one will be a boy

It's the least I can do to help. Just think about getting back alive to see your 2 little ladies at home. I know it's easier said than done, but nrcooled is right--think positive. Know that what you do is making a difference and that you WILL make it back.

I didn't even know what was on the ASVAB until I took it... I'm just good at process of elimination...

Quick update: I check in tomorrow, and will start driving friday morning. My efforts to get my orders changed have (so far) been in vain. I'm waiting on a response from the Commandant of the Marine Corps and my Congressman.
Wish my luck on my long travel.
