I am getting 17X7 wheels and I am wondering what is the fattest (widest) tire I can put on a 1993 240SX SE with 40 offset and 5 1/2 backsetting?  Also, what tire and wheel combo gives the optimal performance for this car?

240/45/17 is the widest I'd run on a 7" wide tire. You might be able to run a little bigger but it might look and  handle funny.

I do not think I've seen a 240/45/17 size tire before, is it uncommon?  If I cannot find that would a 235/45/17 work?

215/45/17 would be the overal best for the size of the rim. I figured you asked for the widest.

I just got some 16x7.5" rims. Should I get 205/50/16, 225/45/16, or bigger? Application will be street and AutoX...Kuhmo ECSTA 712 (there aren't any 215 with the right sidewall for this tire).

I was wrong about the 240/45/17 :\ The 235/45/17 would probly be it for the 7" wide rim.

7" wide can start with a 195 width. the sidewall will roll tworad the middle of the tread "/"
A 205 width will be more flush but still rolling tworad the center of the tread.

A215 will be straight flush with the rim lip "|"

A225 would be a MAX width for a 7" wide rim, and the sidewall will begin to lean out away from the center of the tread"\"

cornering wise a 205 or a 215 is best for minimal sidewall deflection.
A 225 width will make the driving more vuage and the sidewall will take alot of abuse and scruff.

Sorry but what were those last couple of lines?  And would that mean a 235 might even pop off the rim on hard cornering?

225 is for looks, not handling. 195 is too narrow, but some times needed to clear suspension parts.
