What makes a forum?
http://zilvia.net/f/off-topic-chat/3...ommercial.html
So I posted this thread in Off Topic seeing as how that was the most appropriate place. The thread got locked and for the reasoning "Posting in the Wrong Section with a Vid that doesn't warrant it's own Thread." I would like to discuss here to find out the expectations of the forum and the community on what is postable and what isn't and what is expected when making new topics. Zar let me know that this thread: http://zilvia.net/f/off-topic-chat/3...ad-stupid.html had already been made and it sounds like the video should have gone there. But should anyone really have to search for or be expected to find every thread for everything they post. I understand that organization helps people find stuff. But it seems like everything just gets dumped into these 'super threads' and gets lost. Then when someone makes a thread for one thing it get's locked. If the thread was really bad wouldn't it make sense to just let it die by itself? Why take the effort to lock it? I would also like to discuss why we all (myself included) insist on posting "search" on common subjects. A forum is to discuss and share ideas and thoughts, or so I was lead to believe. I don't see the problem with having multiple threads about the same thing. Especially when each thread could have unique information and may be hit in the search function by different keywords used. Please no references to the "read this before posting" thread or any bitching about specific threads, mine was only cited to give a reference. I would like this to be constructive for our community on Zilvia.

From my understanding of it all, they (mods/admins) dislike the clutter. They close things they deem irrelevant or say - wrong section, yada yada.
But I do agree, while discussing one subject, say Megan coilovers, the OP might just want to know technical information, ie shock and bound measurements, whatever. Another member posting about the coilovers, in his own thread, might want to know about a totally different aspect of the coilovers, processing and manufacturing locations, blahblahblah. I feel both are good enough points as to let their threads go on until answered, or the OP is satisfied with his answer. Yes, the subject in question has been explored before, but have they in both those terms? The OP isn't wanting a review, the OP isn't wanting opinion on which is better. Would it be right to lock down the threads and say 'search dipshit'. I personally feel Zilvia has kind of lost its tech-savy side and gone with the simple answer, fully knowing its not going to help anyone. "Search Noob" Everyone become so jaded, and all the newcomers can see it. /End Rant. |

That thread probably should have gone here...
http://zilvia.net/f/media-forum-pictures-videos/ seeing as how it's the "Forum dedicated to media, such as pictures and videos" |

See, so what's the point? Why all these "everything about cars that are not z cars or 240's goes in off topic, oh, unless they're pics, videos, or other media. Then you have to go to a different forum." What if it's a video of me at an autocross in my 240? Does it go in Motorsports, Media forum, Chat? Does it really matter? If I was to post it up in any of the sections and there was a discussion allowed without closing the topic prematurely the search function would possible have more keyword hits in the thread. Making it easier to find later for someone wanting to see it or the discussion it created.
I'm with Sooshi in that I think it's easy for one to feel jaded and just take the easy way out. I would like to see more discussion even on old topics. Even with topics like 300zx brake swaps. Who knows, maybe someone will figure something out or maybe even take more/better pics of what they did. I encourage everyone to try and NOT post "search" and try and help. And to contribute to this thread. lol

It's just trial & error.
It's nothing personal if you get a couple threads locked. It's nothihg personal if someone tells you to go search. yeah, it's sometimes vague where you draw the line between categories, but again it's trail & error. in addition, there's a good deal of discretion/judgement calls from the mods. if it's considered pointless, it'll be locked. i find them to be reasonable & consistent most of the time. take into consideration it isn't a democracy. Multiple threads on the same subject is just frustrating & disorganized. No reason why ppl can't bring new and/or related ideas to the same thread Searching is very straightforward & simple. Some forums are more tightly regulated than others. This isn't for everyone, but that doesn't necc speak poorly of the site or users who aren't compatible imo. |

SEARCH and read before posting, this has been done plenty of times
IMO if a thread is really bad, I would also be quick to lock it. The reason why is because OP is even a warning or reason to the lock and some forum users love to derail the thread with useless posts. You've seen it before, where posts become so abstract and pointless...lets not forget the constant "IBTL" posts. Anyways, I can see where you're coming from but everything that goes in a forum is at the discretion of the moderators/admins. :/

Have you ever been invited into someone else's home and start moving around all the pictures on the Walls and the furniture, just because you feel that the recliner and the picture of the Statue of Liberty should be in the bedroom instead of the den?
Zilvia.net is set up in a way that we (the owners and staff) have deemed efficient and organized. You posted a (imo stupid) commercial and talked about bowel movements. No, it doesn't deserve it's own thread, nor will it ever. I locked it, just as I, and other staff members, have locked NUMEROUS other posts that weren't in the proper place. It was not a personal attack. It's not because I dislike you. It's not because I was just trying to be mean. Feel free to continue discussing it though, if it makes you feel better.

I understand this forum is run by mods and it's by their judgement that threads are locked and what not. But since you just said the thread was stupid why don't we make a list of what we think the mods deem stupid is so no one posts things in those categories? I know it's not a personal attack or you dislike me. I don't have delusions that someone on the internet is out to get me. I would just like to have made clear what is expected. I do not want this thread to be taken as the mods aren't fair or doing their job either. This is about the whole forum. How about that scenario that I posted with the three forums? Would it be acceptable to post in any of those forums or would one be chosen over another?

It would have been more acceptable to post in the Media Forum.
Most acceptable to post in either the Random Video Thread, or the Commercial Thread. Yes, I said it was stupid, but that is just my personal opinion. Creating a Thread simply to show off a commercial which you may think is funny, and then comparing it to "pooping" is pretty stupid to me. However, the lock was because there were already better places in which it could have been posted.

the times ive posted "search", or any version to that, is when i've already done a previous search and found several threads relating to the topic..current or old...
does it make sense to go thru 12+ dozen threads about how to 5 speed swap, FUCK NO!...i rather have all the information in one thread...if i really wanna get my shit done, i read...simple...even if it is a simple answer...u tend to learn that there are other possible issues you might run into as you read... theres constant repeats, either coilovers, turbo's, 5 spd swap, brake swaps, etc... when i have a question, i search, if theres already a thread on it, i rather post in the thread, bring it back from the dead...and get an answer, especially since its already there...it must have been valid, but i search... for example...the Shades thread i resurected from back in what 05!...it was pre-existing, so why not...and i took the time ot search both "shades" & "Sunglasses" and i can say most people here never take the time to even bother to search... and yes there are several threads like that...about things we already have documented... as far as random video's, theres a section for it...if we made threads for every single video or picture, that everyone found funny...i could only imagine the chaos of tryin to find shit that is relevant... honestly most threads are judgment call by those who are in charge whether to lock, let die, spam, or flame...do we all agree with them 100%...no...not always...

Most thread from the deads are not worth the bump. If a thread from six years ago is bumped for some one to say "I agree bro, that was super gay" nothing was added.
