I think the OP's point was (or maybe should have been) that while this may have been intended in good fun and while it probably isnt that offensive to anyone maybe certain things should not be marginalized for advertising both because maybe its wrong but more because you don't fuck with certain things: i.e. civil rights in america, fascism in Germany, or the holocaust in a synagogue, fornication with a priest, abusing women in a battered womens shelter, abusing women in general, etc.
Maybe it has been a long time, maybe tensions shouldn't be what they are, and yes maybe laughing is the first step to getting over these parts of history... but a commercial for a convenient, crappy (yet tasty) comestible is not the place to do it! Why: 1. It isn't good for profit, 2. It isn't good for public image which isn't good for profit 3. If you get blacklisted by certain community standards organizations (such as the ratings boards for television..) you lose the ability to place ads in almost every venue in print (for details, see the problem with X-ratings and the fight to change to NC-17) |

Hey y'all.
I have this awesome idea for a movie. It will be about two white guys who are brothers, and they are also detectives, and in order to solve a crime they have to go undercover disguised as two black women. Not sure what I'll call it yet, so far I have come up with the name Black Chicks. Basically, all of the humor in the movie will be based on good 'ole racial and gender stereotypes. What do y'all fine gentlemen think? I think it would be a big hit. |

yes, thats called targeting a product to a market. Thats also a movie, and no matter how commercial hollywood may have become there is a distinction.
Now, if you were a trying to sell something to a middle aged man who listens to NPR, do you really think you would advertise it in Black Chicks? Number D: You are witty, ha ha ha. Letter 7: great job missing the entire point of the thread, its not that it wont make money it is that it is in poor taste. You may disagree, but you cannot discuss whether or not it is in poor taste by saying it would make a lot of money. Or you could, but it would mean nothing. And I guess that is really the point. Maybe Black People should learn not to take everything racial quite so seriously (not saying that they do take it too seriously, but simply that the argument could be made). However, maybe poking fun at the struggle for civil rights is not something that hot pockets should be doing; I don't think convenience food is going to be a real talking point in racial relations. |
