I am back to my build. We took a hiatus from my chassis to finish my friends 86' Corolla (see Cage Thread), pick up a S13 Hatch Shell which my buddy and I will be building in conjunction with mine. But first, we have to complete all the fabrication to my chassis. So lets continue!

Picked up a 5000 lbs Rotisserie (future use)

Did some spring cleaning which included cleaning the tool box

It Begins....

To give perspective, the B Pillar (Main Hoop) is almost same width as inside shell. We got away with this due to the fact it will sit a little back, less than two fingers. Dimple dies would be about 1"
The A Pillar lays against the sheetmetal inside the cabin which will allow for stitch welding straight to the shell itself. Down the window its less than a thumb so if I do decide to run dimple dies, they will have to be 1/2". The down bend is also against the sheetmetal until the final 4" which was done to get the torch all the way around the base boxes which will be fabricated soon.

Stay Tuned!

Took a break to check the progress of my friend's Corolla we built a cage for a month ago. He laid paint on the inside and back half of the shell. Still need to paint doors, bumpers and hood but so far I am digging the color. And before you purists ask, YES it will be TWO TONE.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled station. Tossed the seats in one more time to determine harness bar location and check head clearance for both occupants. I am happy to report minimum of 4" to the nearest bar.

ME: Trying to determine rough mounting position for steering column
CHARLIE: Zoned out lol

Now on to trans tunnel cover, cover plates for all the various openings on the firewall, floor and misc places that will not be used. Then door bars, rear section and finally front tube!

My coworker dropped by for a bit to check the progress. Yes I did take it for a spin. We just installed parts for a proper Stage 2 Cobb AP tuned setup.

Rear tube is in. We plan to make a minor change but for the most part I like how they turned out. Since the fuel cell/battery portion unbolts, the support tube must also.

Tossed in the dash, seat and brake pedal to set the depth of dbw gas pedal. Its now welded in place. We also took some measurements of the ideal steering column location. Because the dash was cut for the previous chassis, I purchased another one to cut and flock for this cage. It will have a proper fit.

Oh yeah.... my stainless flower pot and planting kit came in.

Cage is now broken down, out of the chassis to be welded in most hard to reach places as well as the base plates. I will be making the front plate/box combo tomorrow. Once in, the steering column, trans tunnel cover and door are next on the list.

Base Cage is complete. Gussets, Stitch Welds and finishing items will be added after media blast. I am pretty damn excited about this one. The pictures do not do the fitment justice. We used every available space, laying the bars against sheet metal for maximum room.

Thank you guys for the continued interest.

Yes. Small round bar welded and shaped to the cut out. I now have the cover cut and bent to match the new structure. And yes it will be removable with Dzus fasteners. I am far from done. I'll post progress pics in the near future.

I know right? He also wears flip flops while using the plasma torch and thinks face shields are for pussies.

New sheet metal w/Sweet Mfg captive column shaft support bearing

Sweet Mfg Custom Ujoint machined to Nissan intermediate shaft. Charlie machined the dowel pin and welded close. Solid direct connection now.

Adjusted column position to center of seat. Custom suit type fitment. The direct feel and ZERO play is phenomenal.

Interior and Rear cage is done. Now its on forward to the front end. Woot!

That's a sharp angle for that u-joint. Have you tested it out to see if it binds at all?

Yeah full lock to lock. It's 34* which according to Sweet Mfg it is within their "working angle".

Tossed the front end on to make sure all items will clear the fabrication to come. I was finally able to pull all the new parts out of their dust covered boxes.

Gotta love new oem hardware

Actually looks somewhat like a vehicle now

Purchased pretty much all of it through Stainless Headers. They said they would refund me what I don't use. It's premature really. Once we get everything in place I'll know exactly how much material I need and bend radius from the IceEngineWorks kit.

I will PM you specifics.

Lower Frame Brace/Tension Bracket Support

More Brace Plates

Okay, enough with the B&W photos. The chassis is ugly, I have finally accepted it for now. I cannot wait for media blasting lol.

Now, the hotness! This is a single bar, starts from the firewall plates, up and thru the strut tower, forward, angled and down to the lower frame brace. This structurally ties the front of the car (strut towers and frame) to the strength of the cage. The reason behind the firewall plates is FD Legal rules. They do not allow any extra firewall penetrations for fire safety.

The results...

Main Tubes are now tied to the strut towers. I also added the frame tabs for mounting both the bash bar and rotisserie.

Also fabbed up an aluminum plate which will double as a base for the hydro ebrake handle and shifter boot base. I plan to add another one which will sandwich the boot and add a clean appearance.

Upper Tube and Headers shortly to follow...

Thanks Stewart! I love your R32 man. It is exactly how I would modify one.

Front End tubing as begun. Just as the back tube frame, the upper piece is removable for servicing.

We rolled it to the back of the shop to get a customer car in and out this week. I have some other little trick items I will be adding soon.

Customer's Front End. S13 Hatch w/flip-ups. Reinforced headlight and motor, front bumper support/tabs (no sagging) and bash bar. Removable upper radiator support for easy access.

Dropped by to see how my friends Corolla is progressing (one a few pages back)....

Now back to our regularly scheduled program....

We use all forms of measurement...

Custom tension rods "aka: dog bones" to provide fine adjustment, support and removability to the upper tube.

I will add tubs back in to keep majority of debris directly impacting the motor since it will see street use.

Headlight and Side Marker mounts complete. You wont find rivnuts, zip ties or set screws here. All metal metric threaded to match oem specs'

I just need to finish the tubs, tac a bash bar setup in place and the header can finally begin. Thanks for the continued interest!

Thank you for the kind words! My man Charlie laying down the welds. My good friend Dennis designed/made the support brackets. Minor update only. Tubs and bash bar are in the works.
