Spun Rod Bearing Question. PLEASE HELP!!
so im pretty sure i spun a rod bearing in my sr. it drive fine and sounds fine at idle but if you pop the hood and pull the throttle cable you can hear a horrible noise around 3k but then it stops if you let it go back down to idle. i know there are different grades of rod bearings, i read something about you have to get the numbers off the crank that will tell you which ones to get but i was wondering if all s13 sr's are the same? if so do any of you guys know which grade i need to get? please help me out, im trying to get this fixed asap. thanks!

Have you checked the oil level? I've had that done to me where it'd make a really bad noise when I rev it up, but quiets down when I let it idle. The oil level appeared to be ok, but later found out it had the wrong dipstick... the dipstick was too long, so it read ok on the stick, but it was actually LOW, like it only had half a quart in it. Drained the oil, and refilled it to the correct amount, scribed a new mark on the stick, and it's been ok ever since.

youp spun rod bearing
If it gets louder through the RPMS its a bearing So first things first STOP RUNNING THE ENGINE! the more you run it the more damage your causeing pull the crank take it to a Machinest and he can tell you if the crank is still usuable you maybe need to machine the crank if the crank is scared, so then you will have to get oversized bearings the numbers are for the bearing sizes are for non fubar cranks so if the crank does not need to be Machined then you can use the formula to get new bearings the SR FSM has a step by step procedure on doing that

dont drive it!!! take your motor out, remove crank shaft, have them machine it, get bearings that fit the new machine sized crankshaft. whala, good as new, i had to do this idk how many times in my 96 gsx. dsm=crankwalk =/

i know this is a newb question but ive never done anything to the bottom end of a car at all. after they machine it all down how will i know what size bearings to get? and would it be cheaper to get it machined or just buy a used crank that isnt scared up?

depends on where you go, and the machine shop will tell you how much they machined down, they usually have bearing for you. depends on how bad it spun. if the crankshaft is really egg shaped, you might be better off buying a used crankshaft, but ive always had better luck having the machine shop take care of it, spinning a rod bearing in my cases were all oil starvation, what oil do you run, and how often do you change it? were you at high RPM's when this happened? when did you notice this vicious knock?

hopefully its not bent if you ran it for a while, and not too fucked up seeing that your not sure when it spun But if they have to machine the crank they will tell you how much and maybe able to tell you the appropriate bearing size. If not you'll have to plasti gauge the clearances. Get that shit balanced while your at it too. It will be cheaper to machine it, if you buy a used crank what not to say that one would be bent or jacked up either. More than likely you need a new oil pump too.

The crank will more than likely need machining, requiring oversized bearings. The machine shop will know what to do for you. Just know that if you spun a main bearing the block itself cannot be machined, you'll need a new one.
