I wanted pirahnas before but their only cool if you have a bunch in a tank. Plus they just look like Pacu's. I personally like raising Arowanas, and Flowerhorns only. Mainly because of their colors and value they hold for resale. I had a spotted alligator gar before too, super sick. How much you pick up the babys for?

picking it up tonight after work. it's still full and has a couple crappy fish in it. i'll drain it to 10 gallons or so and let the fish hang in it to help cycle it when i refill. i want to plant it, maybe get some co2 going.

got the tank home, about to go to wal mart for some gear. it's woodgrain, i think i'm going to spray it and the stand semigloss black. but first i need to get a foot of decent water in it so these fish don't die in their paint bucket.

progress
here's the two fish i'm stuck with. a goldfish the size of a can of working man's beer and an algae eater 24oz in length i'm hoping the fish store down the street will adopt these, because they really have no place in my plans :/ i do kind of dig the algae eater, but he'd just ruin the plants i want to put in. so to finish this threadjack, here's what i got for $60 -55 gallon fish tank -stand -cheapo air pump -whisper 60 HOB filter -whisper heater -hood w single tube fixture -some gravel and junk -bigass goldfish -bigass suckerfish i'll replace the whisper 60 here pretty soon with a nice canister setup, get a brighter bulb, paint the thing, blah blah. but this was one helluva deal, the filter alone is like $40 new...

Damn you! Now you got me all interested back into aquarium. Man, Now I want to buy another Seaclear or Truvu 60 gallon set up with Fluval 404 and shit. Damn you!! Now I will buy like 2 gallons of Amquel!! and try to do that moss. You wouldn't believe how addicting fresh and salt aquarium is. What I do with cars and what I do with fish related things: 1. Check Craigslist and ebay for good Acrylic tanks and canister filters (like we do for 240sx parts) 2. Retrofit T5 actinic bulbs/ Halides / Power compacts (like we do for 240sx HIDs) 3. Try to make shit like a (Homedepot DIY SUMP) (like people make an Homedepot Intake) Thanks for the MOss link...I said that I quit with Aquariums, now you go me all into it again and shit. |

My dad caught a pretty big piranha when we were bass fishing in a local pond last year. It was about 12"...we were going to a family party later that day hosted by my cousin who's a self styled gourmand, so we brought the piranha for him to grill up along with the rest of the food. Wasn't half bad :0

get a fluval fx5 thing is the shit. or get a filstar xp3 or 4 those are amazing also. if you still want to rock the hob filter i highly recommend a marinland or however yuo spell it emperor 400 i love the bio wheels. what i personally use is the 400 with a xp3 canister filter. the bio wheels keep the eco system in check and the xp3 keeps the water clear as hell. i also work at a hardware store where we cut all types of glass, lexan, anything pretty much. im going to build a 300 gallon tank at work.

also you guys might want to look into sand. main reason its bad ass and easier to clean poop and other shit off. since the gravel traps gunk. i am deff going to look into the moss. maybe getting the moss going on a log or a rock.

how do you clean sand? i use a Python for water changes and use it to vacuum the gravel. i'd imagine a gravel vac would just suck the sand up.
i'd love to have sand, i'd like to see cories doing the burrowing thing.

you clean sand with a sifter. i use the same one people use to clean sand for like a lizard. just make sure the filters outlet is at least 3 inchs away from the sand. buy the sand dump in a bucket, stick a house in it and let it run for about 5 mins or till the water becomes cleaner. dump the sand in the tank but dont run the filters for about a night. let the sand settle then start the filter.

it sounds like you're explaining how to clean sand before putting it in the tank.... i mean, how do you clean it once it's in the tank? like, i clean my gravel substrate with a gravel filter. how do you clean sand?

The sand is lighthouse pool filter silica sand, 10 bucks at NAMCO. Mine took like two days to clear up, but sure as shit all my levels have been fine since before i put the fish in. I put 10lbs of sand into the 55 gallon tank.
Blue Lobster I got at a pet store around here. He kicks ass and is one mean creature, he beats up the other crays, posts up in and on that rock and spreads his arms out looking to catch fish. The P's are just a little too fast for him though. thankfully.
