ON the way to work this morning, I saw that 'vette again. You know the one, Yellow, drives up and down I-15 all the time. Has a HUGE wing on the back like something out of that movie Death Race 2000. Well, maybe you don't know but anyway, I was thinking. Why hasn't anyone started a race from San Diego to .... I don't know, Maine? I mean for cars that aren't older than Henry Ford. I know there's a race across America or something, But it's all classic cars from the '40s and earlier. I mean a RACE. I'm sure that it would probably um... coughillegalcough... and while I'm not exactly advocating breaking the law, I'm not above it either. Whatcha think? If you had say, three weeks off of work would you do it? Hmm....

Well there's already a Gumball Rally. Those races included driving across Europe, other parts of Asia, and in the US -- from New York to LA The dumbasses that wish to show off do get the tickets and dragged off to jail. And all those cars range from Lamborghinis to old roadsters. In one of Mischief Videos, a couple girls had a mini cooper and they were on track with everyone else. It would be fun, but cops would be on the lookout to pull over all the rice rockets.

Ahh, a conundrum. I'm talking about a litttle less high profile. If the cops know about it and hang out waiting for you to hit 71 in a 70 zone, well then all the fun is gone, know what I mean? I think I have a new mission in life....

Well they see a horde of cars racing through their county, of course they're gonna pull you over. Maybe if you decided to do it at night time and quite possibly could get away, but you'd have to wait when the sun has gone down and there's no traffic.

I read out of a magazine, i think car and driver, about the original Cannonball Rally. They went from N.Y. to cali. Each team punched a time card when they left. I think the fastest time was about 36 hours. It was a really good artical.

I can't figure out which would be better...A specified route everyone must take, or just a starting point and a finishing point, and maybe some checkpoints in between. I would probably enter in something like this...seeing as how it should only take about a week total!

keep the ideas comming

I was actually just thinking about this the other day...
Sounds pretty cool if you ask me. I was also thinking about another type of race. This one would have to be sanctioned however...And the city hosting the race would have to not care if one of it's major highways was shut down for a few days.

Here's my idea...Most cities have a large looping highway around them. This is usually like the business route or whatever so those who don't need to go right through a big city can go around it without lots of stop-go traffic. These highways are usually 3-5 lanes wide (pretty darn wide). What if the city shut down this highway for like four days and allowed major races to take place on them... like La Mans (sp?) and other touring races. and then maybe have like a day where amateurs could race. They would have to pay a hefty price...but there are a lot of filthy rich bastards out there who would do it.

I came up with this idea when I was driving around st. louis over the weekend. It was late and I was driving on highway 64-40 pretty fast. It would be fun as hell to be able to drive around st. louis pushig 150 in a race car.

That Gumball Run 3000 looked awesome. You guys who are interested in this type of race should go to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy Mischief 3000 by teckademics. I think they are a DC area crew ( i always see their cars around)....but ne ways, Muschief 3000 is a documentary they made about Gumball 3000. The guys actually participated in it. One team was in DTM Power's yellow M3 and one team was in a Ferrari 360 spider. Those cars in the video were badass. I saw many rare cars : Ferrari F50, Skyline R33, Tuscan TVR Speed6 (sp?)...many more. THey have a movie trailer and actually the whole video if you are interested in Downloading it from Kazaa. Oh well. It looked cool and if i had a faster car...i would do it.

S1LV1A,

I want to take that front bumper, attach it to the front end of a S14a, that is attached to a 180sx rear end. That is my dream car

Gum Ball 3000 is 8000 pounds (about 12 grand) to enter. If you would shell out that much money and drive in your 240 I would be surprised. (If you did though make sure to make me your co-pilot)

They have an Indy car race every year at an airport in Cleveland, they turn the runways and taxiways into a circuit. No way shutting down major beltlines for any amount of time would work in any major US cities. The city would basically grind to a halt.
The idea of a cross-country race isn't new. The original Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy run (the one the Cannonball movies were based on) was run five times, I believe, in the 1970's. It was the brainchild of Brock Yates, of Car & Driver magazine. If you've seen the movie Cannonball Run, Brock Yates was actually in it, he was they guy sitting at the timeclock table at the start of the race. The whole thing was started as a protest against the national 55 MPH speed limit that took effect in the '70s during the fuel crisis and was finally struck down in the early 1990's. The first Cannonball was run in 1971 and was won by Brock Yates and Dan Gurney driving a Ferrari Daytona.
Mr. Yates has a new book out called"Cannonball! World's Greatest Outlaw Road Race." It's got really detailed accounts of the real races, and talks about what the movies got right and what they didn't.
Today, the Cannonball has been merged into the One Lap of America, where entrants travel around the US from racetrack to racetrack, competing at the tracks but driving legally between them. Still an adventure, but expensive to enter.
As for doing a true Cannonball-style outlaw road race today, there is no way it would work as a sanctioned event in the US. Lawyers and insurance companies have way too much power and would ruin it like they ruin everything else. But as for a casual, non-sanctioned, near-zero-publicity race across the country between friends or organized by a low-profile internet community, it might work. Higher speed limits and improved technology on both sides of the law would make it really interesting.
If you want to get into the spirit of the thing, there are a few movies you might want to go rent (Not to say they're good movies, just that they're about this subject): Cannonball Run, Cannonball Run II, Speed Zone (was supposed to be Cannonball Run III) and The Gumball Rally.

A lot of those guys are not from the u.s. so they just give the cops fake licenses, etc... They'll be out of the country anyways, so doesn't matter. Not only that, if they have enough money to have a car like that, bail's nothing to them.
