I've been wanting to see this movie for a while now since its "a classic." So I rented it itwith about 8 friends and we all hated it! It's 2:15 long, and we got thru it in about an hour and a half cuz we were so fricking bored that we just started to fast forward till something interesting looking happened.

Has anybody on here seen an enjoyed this movie?? And where did the name of it come from... thanks!

i was so drunk that when i got my dinner from the vending machine, i hit the button for meatloaf instead of buffalo wings. not only that, but it didn't my $2 change from my $5 bill. god i was so pissed!

Watch it again...and again. Its pretty much a given for any Kubrick film. Next time rent Space Odessey. You'll LOVE that one.

it took me like 4 times for space oddysey. dr strangelove is awesome movie, and of course my favorite kubrick movie of all times should be easy to guess. Full Metal Jacket

Don't worry man. I'm with you. That movie sucked. Maybe 10 or 15 years ago it would have been good, but it just sucks now. The things that are supposed to be "shocking" are just boring nowadays.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I heard that the title "A Clockwork Orange" is a reference to people, seeing as they explore the complexity of the human mind and what affects it, etc. etc.

It's Kubrick, you either love it or hate it. I enjoy Kubrick's work immensely.

from Anthony Burgess' preface in the modern american prints:

"...I do not think so because, by definition, a human being is endowed with free will. He can use this to choose between good and evil. If he can only perform good or only perform evil, then he is a clockwork orange--meaning that he has the appearance of an organism lovely with colour and juice but is in fact only a clockwork toy to be wound by God or the Devil or (since this is increasingly replacing both) the Almighty State. It is as inhuman to be totally good as it is to be totally evil.
...I don't think I have to remind readers what the title means. Clockwork oranges don't exist, except in the speech of old Londoners. The image was a bizarre one always used for a bizarre thing. "He is as queer as a clockwork orange" meant he was queer to the limit of queerness. It did not primarily denote homosexuality, though a queer, before restricitve legislature came in, was the term used for a member of the inverted fraternity. Europeans who translated the title as Arancia a Orologeria or Orange Mécanique could not understand it Cockney resonance and they assumed that it meant a hand grenade, a cheaper kind of explosive pineapple. I mean it to stand for the application of a mechanistic morality to a living organism oozing with juice and sweetness."

its got some kinky scenes, i'de bang a few of the chicks in that flick...

but as for the movie itself, i think its crap. i saw it many years ago when i was a kid, i didnt understand much then just watched it because it was kinda taboo back then.. especially when you're like 8 or 13.. whatever.

i watched it several times after that, thinking i would understand more. i came to understand that the movie is an absolute bore. i mean, they're trying to make a point.. and i guess for some people they do, which is fine.. thats the whole reason for making movies, to move the audience and help them understand. but, for me, i'll pass on movies like clockwork orange, fight club, requiem for a dream, and even amelie (although that had a good soundtrack), vanilla sky, blah blah.. all of these movies were interesting but not enjoyable to watch -- nor are they noteworthy for me.

i also disliked taxi driver and the shining. although, i did like being john malcovich and one flew over the coocoo's nest.. in my opinion, weird but awesome flicks.

the just of the idea is to make you get aquanted with such a violent person, then feel compassion for him because he can no longer be the violent person he is. thats my take in a nut shell.

It's my all time favorite movie with dr strangelove being a close second. Kubric is awesome! 2001 is a much better movie if you read the book because there are a lot of things that are so vauge in the movie if you didnt read the book you might miss them. The only kubric film that took me a while to like is eyes wide shut. Its an awesome movie if you have the mind to understand it or at least the time to think about it.

one of the better movies of all time..Kubrick kicks ass...vision for sure...book is better...and only a hundred or two hundred easy pages so everyone should check it out...

there are 2 rape scenes actually...the one where they come upon the rival gang raping a girl, which as you said was definately different in the book..i think she was 14 or so...and then the rape scene in the house they break into..

and that's not the only different sex scene...the 3 some scene in the book involves 12 or 13 year olds i think and he gets them drunk and takes their virginity not entirely consensually...

one flew over the kukoos nest was an absolutely amazing book. the intense visuals it gives are great, there is such paranoia and "dillusion" in the character of the chief. i saw the movie two or three years later after reading the book and about threw up. so boring and bland, none of the spectacular descriptions turned into film, blah....

and yea, he gets them drunk and does them. when they sober up they whine and bitch and things of the sort.

my favorite kubrick film is by far full metal jacket, then a close runner up with 2001 a space odyssey. they both did completly what i think kubrick wanted them to do.

wasnt it kubrick who was making the movie A.I. then he died and speilberg took it over? a bit off topic but i just remembered about it and was curious if i lost my mind or what

Taxi driver was one of those movies where it was boring to watch, but the next day, it hit me and I was like, that movie rocked! Same with fight club, didnt like that until the second time I saw it. Same with requiem too.. hah.
Notice that almost all of the aforementioned movies are 2+ hours. I get antsy after that long, especially when theres a lot of talking, and not a lot of action (clockwork, requiem, taxi driver)

anyway... thanks for all the responses, I'm definately going to read the book and then watch the movie again. And if it works.... I'll check out more kubrik (2001 and full metal seem to be popular with you guys)

I'm generally not one for books, havent been since I can remember, never read books in high school, just BSed enough to get thru. I had terrible concentration issues though, so I could never read for more than a couple minutes without dazing off and day-dreaming. I have sweet ADD medicine though and can actually read and focus, so I'm gonna read clockwork, and the da vinci code (heard good stuff). Alrighty thanks guys, you've motivated me to pick up a book for the first time in years!!!!
