Holy shit man. You are completely insane. I've never seen someone so absolutely consumed with anger over something like being brought an extra soft drink.

Did a bully try to drown you in Dr. Pepper on the playground in first grade or something?

You keep saying that he's WASTING YOUR TIME!!!, when in reality he's just wasting his own, since you're not actually required to devote a single fraction of a second of your oh-so-precious time to the interaction. He can put it on the table while you keep chatting with your little friends or whatever the hell you're doing.

Seriously, you've got some sort of complex, I'd go get it checked out. Before you have an aneurysm. I get a little angry talking about rude customers I used to get when I waited tables, but Jesus. Not that angry.

As for the rest of the thread. Assuming that your server is being civil and isn't a jackass......be courteous (because you are dealing with a human, not your own personal food bitch-slave), and tip according to service. Period. Average service gets 15%, above-average gets 18-20% or so, etc.

If the service sucks, tip less. I stiffed someone once because she had walked by our table - purposely stopping at every other table around us and checking on them, and ignoring us entirely - five times in a row. I had to go to the bar to get my wife's drink refilled.

If you feel in general that you don't have to tip, or that you only have to tip a dollar or some shit because "it's their job," then stay home and eat Tuna Helper. You are part of this society. By going to a dining establishment, you assume compliance with societal standards, and those standards are to give the server a fucking tip, because NO ONE in this country can survive on $2.13 an hour.

Also, if you're one of those people who likes to be difficult, push the server around, and leave a bad tip just because you can, then fuck you. Good luck with that inferiority complex, and I'll be sure to ask for plenty of price checks next time I come through your checkout line at Target.

You don't seem to understand what I mean by "MY TIME WASTED" do you? The waiter I mentioned at Red Lobster DID waste my time, because instead of him getting my coke quicker, because he would have came to ASK me first, NO, he filled a cup with ice and drink as well as wasted a trip to the table and back. Then he had to make a trip all the way back to dump the drink out and get a new glass to fill with ice and coke, because he got dr. pepper without asking me just because I ordered that the first time around. Do you see HOW he wasted MY TIME? I would have received my coke MUCH FASTER if he would have just came to ASK what I wanted instead of wasting MY TIME making me wait LONGER for the drink I did really want.

What if I don't want a refill and just wanted my check let's say, then that means the server wasted my time when all I wanted was my check, so that means I sat there longer waiting to leave.

Also, what about the other customers you know? If that waiter at Red Lobster would have came to ask me first, he could have been at SOMEONE ELSE'S TABLE THAT MUCH FASTER, giving someone else service that actually WANTED something. So it wastes other people's time than just the server's time, you idiot!!

So you don't know WHAT THE HELL you are talking about that it's just the waiter's time wasted. You are WAY OFF BASE here. You seem to have no common sense not to realize that you are wasting more than just your time if you are a server that gets refills without asking if the customers don't want them.

I don't want the drink on my table if that's not what I ASKED for or was OFFERED. It would be in my WAY for one thing and secondly, if I wanted something else then it would have been a real waste getting it for all customers he had as well as himself.

I wasn't rude. I just said to the waiter "Can I have a coke this time?" I NEVER WAS RUDE TO HIM ONE TIME!! I was pissed off, but didn't act like that towards him. I was mad that he made a decision that wasn't his and was EXTREMELY, VERY INCONSIDERATE to ASSUME what I wanted or IF I wanted a refill even. Just as we get a menu to decide what we want, well, soft drinks or tea or water are no different here that the server doesn't get to decide these things. It's VERY INCONSIDERATE to just decide something for someone without their permission to do so, especially when they are a STRANGER to you.

Who gives a shit is she knows what a 240 is.

Can't you people understand that a server once wasted 2.5 minutes of here life when he went to get her the wrong drink.

SO THICK HEADED.

Sorry if I'm dragging this thread on, but I just saw it yesterday. Having served tables at some nice restaurants, and having become something of a food snob since I quit the restaurant business, I have a lot of input.

You forgot to answer this one.

When I referred to "rude customers," I was just using an example of things in the restaurant business that have managed to piss me off. I wasn't calling you rude. Just crazy.

Also, having both served and dined at nice restaurants......if we're out having a nice dinner, I really just want the server to leave us the hell alone.

"How are you doing? How are you doing? Can I get you anything? Is it cooked right? Does it taste good? Do you need more sauce? How about another drink? Same drink? How about another glass of wine? Just a soft drink? Coke this time? How about Sprite? Are you sure? Boy this weather is crazy." There is NOTHING more irritating. I came here to relax and have a nice meal with my wife, not talk to you all night. A good server keeps his/her eye on you and gets you what you need, hopefully before you even ask for it, without being intrusive and bothering you every 5 minutes.

If he brings me an extra drink and I actually want to switch it up and get something else, I'll tell him so, and he'll go get it. Done. It's not that critical.

Then again, I don't go out to dinner with the express purpose of sampling everything their soda fountain has to offer and getting out as soon as possible - I'd rather relax, take my time, and enjoy my meal - so maybe that's why I'm not grasping your point of view.

All I can say, if you're going to tip them little, even though they did a shitty job, I wouldn't even go back if they're the only resturant that is around. They will remember your ass, and your food maybe spitten on or something.

LOL...this actually happened last night at a malaysian resturant. We were trying to order the usuals for dinner. We asked for a certain dish *dont remember the actual name in english*, its something with fried tofu. So the waitress asked if we would like to try this other dish that also has tofu and supposely taste better than the one i normally order. I was like no, I would like the ususal. She kept on fucking asking me, "are you sure?" "it's lot more better." So my gf said "no, its okay." and then again, the waitress asks. So my friend was like, "its ok, we would like the usual." that FUCKING BITCH asks again, so I was like, FINE!! Ten minutes later, the dish came out............shit SUCKS BALLS...I literally said it out loud after all the entrees was served.

It doesn't matter if it's "COMMON" or not, because your server is serving DIFFERENT people and they CAN ASK IF THE CUSTOMER WANTS REFILLS WITHOUT BEING ASK AT THE GREETING INSTEAD OF ASSUME. Also, the CUSTOMER CAN SPEAK UP, such as yourself and say "Could you please bring me refills without asking, I'd really appreciate it?"

Notice how our opinions are different, that you love it, I HATE it? WHY do you think MOST servers don't do it? They don't want to risk doing something for nothing, because honestly, some people don't want refills or they want to change up. Maybe they wanted a coke, then looked at a drink menu on the table and decided to get a margarita instead of another coke, for example. A lot of servers don't want to do work unless they absolutely have to, which means if they don't have to get that refill, they don't want to.

I would say it's not common, but there ARE people out there that DO change up and REFUSE refills.

Since you like when a server does that, TELL them you like that in your service. I don't tell my servers, because it's common sense it's not their place to ORDER for me, nor is it their right. I am the customer, I get to order, NOT THEM!

I can see somewhat why you like it IF you want the drink to an extent, but I just don't like it even if I was going to ask, because they weren't thinking about MY FEELINGS, JUST about what THEY wanted to give me or ASSUMED what I wanted without asking first.

I just rather be able to order for myself and there shouldn't be any of this giving refills without permission unless either the server asks at the greeting if the customers would like that or the customer themself asked if they could have that.

What happened to the CUSTOMER being able to place their own orders? WHY did this get started in the first place? I think it's stupid, because it can waste time for more than just that or those customers that are getting the refills, because if they refuse, that's money and time wasted.

Most servers don't get refills without asking, because some people want something else sometimes or decline refills, so they rather not waste time doing something for possibly nothing.

While I don't like an overattentive server, you want NO service, which proves you need to COOK AT HOME OR GET TAKE-OUT. I mean seriously, HOW THE HECK IS THE SERVER GOING TO KNOW IF YOUR STEAK(for example ,(unless the steak is red vs. black of course)) is cooked enough or your food is RAW or COLD until YOU TOUCH IT?

If you want to relax, try getting take-out or getting someone to cook for you.

You said "A good server keeps his/her eye on you and gets you what you need, hopefully before you even ask for it,", but the thing is, I may NOT ask for it. NO ONE CAN READ MINDS OR HAS ESP! A "GOOD" server makes 100% SURE WITHOUT ANY, ANY, ANY, ANY, ANY DOUBTS in his or her mind that she or he is doing a task YOU DO FOR SURE WANT. She or he is NOT going to get you a refill if it turns out you just want the check or you want something else. A "GOOD" server will be ****CONSIDERATE**** enough to *****ASK***** you instead of CONTROLLING the service. The CUSTOMER CONTROLS the service, NOT THEIR SERVER!! If you want your server to give you "SILENT SERVICE" TELL HIM OR HER!! There are SOME customers that DO like to chit-chat and are very opposite of you about this. Do you realize that?

I agree I don't like 99.9% of the time to chit chat about personal crap or as in your example, the weather, to a stranger when I go out to eat. However, I would like for them to get what I want in a timely manner, be considerate, find out if my food was correct(which it's only correct about 60% of the time for real, because most of the mess ups are forgotten condiments), and make sure I am happy by not wasting my time.

If you don't want them to talk to you, TELL them that you want some alone time and if you need them, YOU will call them over. HOW ABOUT THAT? Most people don't want NO service like you. They want their server to at least CARE if their food is right or not and there are a lot of people that DO like personal conversation out there BTW.

You act like your server is supposed to IGNORE you, well if you want to be ignored, TELL that to your server that you will call him or her over if they are needed and that "When you see our drinks low, you can automatically get refills for us." If you want that type of service, TELL YOUR SERVER TO LEAVE YOU ALONE, but in a NICE manner such as that.

BUT, wouldn't you had rathered*(BE HONEST NOW)* that your server would have not wasted your time and gotten your whatever you did want QUICKER?

HOW, may I ask? If they were "ON TOP", they would COME to your table to FIND OUT FIRST instead of risking doing something for possibly nothing. Being "ON TOP" means they will be as CONSIDERATE as can be. I still say a "CONSIDERATE" server would ask at the time of greeting: "Would you all like refills automatically without asking throughout your service or would you like me to come to ask each time?" *OR* The CUSTOMER can TELL THEIR SERVER what kind of service they want by saying "Can you bring refills without asking please?"

"ON TOP" means they got you what you wanted with knowing that's really what you wanted and didn't just happen to GUESS RIGHT. "On top" means they didn't make you feel obligated(which I have kept a dr. pepper once at Denny's when I wanted a coke), because I felt bad to make her go all the way back. I tired of thinking about the server, when it should have been THEM to have thought about ME, by being considerate and not so damn lazy as to have made a trip to my table first instead of just assuming.

"ON TOP" means they are getting what you want 100% FOR SURE without any doubts.

"ON TOP" means they are being considerate by getting what you want and not wasting your time by getting something you don't want.

i had a very bad time at Guppy's Teahouse on South and Pioneer st. in Cerritos.

I waited roughly about 20 minutes at the entrance to be seated. Mind you that i was never greeted by a waiter/waitress. Even though 3-4 waitresses looked my in the eye while walking by, i was never seated or greeted. I pretty much got pissed and just seated myself and had to flag down the nearest waiter to get a few menus for my party.

After recieving the menus we waited another 30 minutes because noone asked us if we were ready to order. i was forced to once again flag down a waiter just to place an order.

all in all.... we all said f&ck it and left with out tipping a penny. crappiest service i have every had.

Guppy's Teahouse - not one penny

Waiting for no one to greet me and my husband after even just 10 minutes, we LEAVE! SOMEONE should come to the table to say at least "I'll be right with you all in a moment" or something, but to have no one to say anything, we just don't sit around and make ourselves miserable, we leave!! I am just wondering if this place seemed worth the horrible service? At some point, even if I love the restaurant, if I am completely ignored at the beginning, I have every opportunity to give my business to another restaurant instead of going through that hell. I cannot believe you stayed, honestly. I feel no matter how good the food and drinks are, if you cannot get anyone to serve you, you might as well go somewhere else if you ask me.

It really ruins your outing when you have service like that. That's just my 2 cents. I feel NOTHING is worth being that miserable, even if the food is awesome. I'd rather get something else, somewhere else, than to be miserable.

Incorrect.

Good service doesn't have to mean asking 1000 questions. Try paying actual money at a real restaurant, and you'll see what I mean. Red Lobster and Denny's don't count.

Uhh...isn't this what restaurants are for? What did I miss? I worked in them long enough, I thought that's what happens at these places.

Never worked at Denny's though, so maybe I'm wrong about that one.

I think we all want our food to be correct and to be treated with courtesy, we're just not all in such a damn hurry to cram down our food and leave.

You really want to have to tell the server "Hi, could you please leave me alone?" How awkward is that?

Ugh.

still dont understand the huge fuss about getting a refill without being asked. its not placing an order for you, its refilling your original order. if u dont want it, dont drink it and ask for something else.

and me asking "Could you please bring me refills without asking, I'd really appreciate it?" is just stupid. seriously, who does that? its their job. its like me asking "Could you please bring my food when its ready, I'd really appricate it?"

You simply cannot understand such a thought process.

Getting upset at a server for bringing you a free refill is just plain STUPID.
No human can comprehend such thought process.

I hope springs doesn't rant to her servers like she does here.

Otherwise there might have been some unwanted stuff in the dish LOL.

I HAVE gone to fancy restaurants before. Red Lobster and Denny's DO count, because they ARE restaurants just like any other.

As far as you saying "incorrect" that you don't want any service, it's true, you want a MIND READER that READS YOUR MIND, which I hate to break it to you, **THERE'S NO SUCH PERSON THAT CAN MAGICALLY READ MINDS***!!

"GOOD SERVICE" means getting what the customer wants, NOT what the customer DOESN'T want. In order to be able to KNOW, they HAVE TO ASK. If they guess right, GOOD FOR THEM, but they definately aren't always right all the time, especially in my service.

"GOOD SERVICE" means not wasting customer's time getting things that they don't want. Can you please tell me HOW WILL THEY KNOW WHAT YOU WANT IF THERE IS NO COMMUNICATION INVOLVED?

Can you please answer that? I'd like to know HOW in the world are they supposed to magically know what you want or don't want without them asking or you telling them yourself, huh?

NO, what happens is you are given drinks and food. It's up to the customer if they want to relax or be serious such as having a lunch meeting with co-workers.

A restaurant is not to "RELAX", it's to get served food and drinks or just anything you may need during your visit.

I don't want to cram down my food either. There's lots of times AFTER having a dessert, I order a mixed drink. You may say that's a form of "relaxing", well I am CHOOSING to relax, but a restaurant is not for that, it's to eat and drink. My point is, I don't want to leave right away most of the time, but I don't linger my stay beyond after I am finished my drinks or food, because I do think of that other people want to get seated too and if I am finished, I don't need to be there any longer anyways.

NO, I told you how to say it: "Could we please possibly get refills automatically without being asked, I'd really appreciate it?" "We will call you over if we need anything."

If the server can't take the hint, they are STUPID, because saying those things would show that you want some alone time. WHY can't you say things like this so you CAN get the type of service you desire?
