s13 my budget sleepy eye conversion

here's my crack at. i'll try to get better pics this week. w/ them on.

get 4 of these from the junk yard pontiac bonner-ville is a good spot. all on the fire wall. and are sealed.

the bottom of the relay connector should be a 4 wire like this. color of wires mean nothing.

make a cardboard template, cut out of metal and spot weld onto the bare headlight cage. after which measure out where you want the lights to sit.

after words this is how the lights will hang. then raise the cage for wiring.

right behind the cage on the core support is a great location for the light and relay ground.

wiring relay, yes it is that simple.

here i started wiring up the relay. the spade in the factory harness is low beam. the one to the left is the high beam.

this was the first attempt at placement and relised i needed to push the light closed to the front.

after a few slight adjustments. this was the out come.

sorry for the crappy cell pics. but im still doing a lot to the car right now.
in the next month of so i will post up more pics of everything i have done.

A for effort
F for selection of lighting

you should find out how to mod the headlight retracts so you can flip em on and have them set at that height.

thanks.
i all ready have. I'm just getting other things done right now so it isnt a huge thing on my list. its just a matter of measurement and chopping and welding. since the bolt is threaded in different directions.

good job! im about do to this, now i have something to base it off of.

i was just researching lights to use for this, can anyone recommend any? the PIAA tribeams are really expensive, but seem like the only ones with high/low beams.

heres my suggestion. both of the lights you see in my pics are 55w h3 bulbs. I have all ready ordered some 100w h3 8000k texon xenon bulbs to use for the high beams. that was i have a noticeable difference between high and low beams.

jrmyrmx, i dont know how i feel about the tri beam. looks like you can either use it for two high beams, or high beam low beam and a super bright city light, or even like on the S13 Silvia triple beams. fogs high and low. which is a questionable look for me. But the only thing i can see as bad from using them is ya dont have full adjustment of each bulb.

..........^high... ^city...... ^low

either way install would be the same. either 2, 4 or 6 relays to be used. depending on how you want to do it. I could have used 2 relays but i chose 4 incase one goes bad i dont loose a either high or low or both.

FYI this was uber low budget. metal used was scrap. had sip ties, spade, butt connectors, heat shrink and eye thingy's. one set of sae driving lights where given to me. the oterh set of dot approved lights i bought from work "autozone" for a penny. (discontinued) wire was scrap from other projects. Oh the relays. yeah i stole em from the yunkjard.

damn that really is a low budget project, good hunting for parts. thanks for the info, ill wait and maybe i might come across a deal on some tribeams or decided to actually spend money on this project and get the lights below.

if you ever want to pay a bit more for lights i found some really badass ones, $100 a piece. theyre 50mm Hella headlamps meant for custom projects, come in low beam and high beam projectors. they also come in HID versions but you dont want to know the price for that..

I was looking at doing something like this.Only way I'd do it is if I could make a Surround (metal or Plastic) AROUND the lights (like factory) just so it didn't look shitty.

Seems you can probably set & Keep the height at 1 level by making a Bolt LONGER that has the Rubber Stopper on it behind the headlight Cage.that way when they do pop up they'll go to 1 level that was set

Subscribing.

believe it or not. if ya look from the front you dont notice teh lights are hung. mostly cause the cage is sitting so low. as for the side i took the stock plastic covering and cut straight down the lines and bolted em on after a little sanding. next day i have off and can get in the garage. I'll snap a few more pics for ya.

ok ya have the right idea but wrong concept. when it comes to having the flip ups work. you want to short the bar on the side. this will allow the head lights to only go to one position. cause if ya use a rubber bumper. it will either hit it and shut. or burn the motor up cause it still wants to go up. I've playeda little w/ this already. fealt it was a huge concern right now. as i am just a few warm days away from taking my car for a test ride.

I was looking at these again.

which are availabe online or in some auto parts store's. cost is 40.00 w/ out discounts. Also which are stupid bright. "use to own them before" theirs also enough room for HID's in them. which ya can find a decent HID on Ebay for cheap. I know these pretty well cause we put em in my boys civic.

eBay Motors: HID Conversion Kit H1 H3 H4 H7 H11 9004 9006 9007 3000k (item 300277269112 end time Feb-27-09 17:08:06 PST)

Im not looking into doing HID's at the moment untill i can get some sort of alt upgrade. between 3 sets of driving lights, electric fans, full msd, innovate wide band, glow shift gauges and a small system. Im kinda pushing it all ready. you now.

while i was in the hosp the other day i was thinking. HID's on top of everything that I all ready have might actually be a bad idea. SO I'm just gonna stick w/ the xenon bulbs.

Here's mine with 3000k HID's and 8000k HID's and I have 3000k HID's in the CTRL's. THe CTRL's are on their own switch. The 3000K's come on with the parking lights and the 8000k's come on as the headlights. Don't really need hi-beams with three sets of HID's lol.

I was thinking of doing the Quest alternator since I just had my motor out but the stock alt is working just fine no problems at all.

By the way I have 3 sets of HID lights, 2 electric fans, full msd, Prosport gauges (5), turbo timer, S-AFC2, a small system (2 amps, 2 6.5", 2 6x9" and 8" sub) and a CB radio and no problems with the stock alt. This is all on a Miata battery.

damn homie thats still a beast electrical pull. I'm willing t bet if you dyno'd the car before and after doing a quet alt you would see a few number differances. nothing drastic. also please define a small system. lol to me a small system is right around the 1000 watt area "600 mids and highs 400 for bass a fared cap"

haha I remember when my car was that color. think it lasted that color all of three days before i rattle canned it.

not to be rude but IMHO it looks like both those lights came from autozone, isle 5, right hand side, on the bottom row of the section. 40.00 for each pair. just wondering how much e-bay stuck you for them? BTW the city might int eh one def gets cool points. lol i was thinking about drilling a small hole in one of mine so i gcould have a city light too. I'm still not sure if it would be too much. Considering the thought that Im thinking about getting rice and adding some strob lights "just ordered" up in there. like my black ass needs to draw more attention to anti traffic law having ass.

Richmonders are some cheap bastards...lol. I feel ya though bud. I just never had the heart to do any cheap-o mods to my S14, I left that with my 1st car...Hyundai Excell. The car never ran longer than a week at a time (with 1 month broken time between weeks). SO i had plenty of time to try different little ghetto-fab ideas. Finally...after the 2nd engine fire...i sold it to my neighbor as a parts car for $200

I don't have an S13, sorry. If I did though, I could one up you easily. I'd at least use an OEM Nissan relay, make all the wiring look OE, and not use jank ass butt connectors that are one size too big for the wire. Everything I do to my car, and all my work period, is done to look completely OE and integrate into the car just as Nissan would have done it. You choose the route of 'throw a rat's nest at it because it's cheap and quick'. It's cool, you have your way, I have mine. Yours will quit working one day from a broken wire or just catch on fire and burn to the ground, mine won't.

Free doesn't have to mean shitty.
