^^Chicago is a no-go (FML)...

Unless I drop the fully functioning PFC and get an AEM Infinity for the 'low low' price of $2,700 plus adapters etc etc etc.

Gonna risk getting the tune done here... then take her to Atlanta for final tweaks next year.

^^Vids shortly.

Rough day on the dyno... Having fuel pressure issues. First & foremost, since we were at Pur Performance, I went ahead and got a gauge/adapter for real-time fuel pressure indication:

^^Pic above at idle (38-40psi)... Never got to tune it past 1.0-1.1 bar... Basically, the fuel pressure would go up like it was supposed to (55psi in boost)... then start to drop at 6200-ish rpm and steadily decrease all the way to redline... ending up at only about 28-30psi. AFR was 11.5 across the board, then by 7,500 it was about 13.5-13.7 no matter what we did. Verified no leaks at the engine bay feed, return, rail, filter etc etc...

It's either bad wiring or a leak at the pump, or maybe the -6AN lines I did from the hardlines to the pump feed/return have a slight leak. All I know is that when I first got the car back, it was straight up terrifying... Now it still pulls like a mofo, but not nearly as hard as it did when I shattered the tranny lol... Lack of fuel pressure up top definitely explains it lol

The plan:

- Replace -6AN lines at pump with 'regular' 5/16 fuel lines

- Pull pump out & check/fix splices, plumbing etc. & add larger-gauge wiring.

After that, I'll bring it back to the dyno & give it a try. If that doesn't fix, I will go ahead and hotwire it to the battery with a relay for the switched 12VDC as suggested via mobile shoutout (Thanks Glenn, Andy, Brad & Debbie Downer ).

IMO, it's GOT to be something silly as it was fine until recently. Yet another 'build issue' in need of attention.

For the time being, she's making about 360whp at 1bar (Dynojet for those who may wonder); so I'm pretty sure that 400-420 @1.5-1.6bar will happen. Although laggy, that M8270 is a beast~

Gonna keep the boost at a bar for now & not run her past 6000rpm... With the tweaks Chuck made, the idle is awesome at 950-1000 (15BTDC) & the motor runs MUCH smoother throughout. Got a lot on my plate atm. Hope to get her back on the dyno in a week or 3... But with Xmas coming, it may end up being early next year...

Didn't bother grabbing a printout... The curve was rough as he didn't mess with the timing due to the FP problem... Just picture everything going well, then AFR starting to rise steadily where the turbine really starts to put out.

At first, I was like "FML'... but in the end, I look at it as a positive. Had I not taken her in yesterday, I may not have known she was leaning out up top (knock STILL hasn't read past 17!)... I did change the plugs the night before last just as a precautionary measure... Thinking they may have been fouled due to the rich initial tune... However, they were VERY clean & had little/no carbon on them. Should have known that maybe the car was on the lean side; but I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer... and they weren't blatantly white or anything. I can take/post a pic of them later if anyone's interested.

Ok well, that's the update. Will post hopefully with better news soon.

Thanks again for looking & reading~

Mike

this gives me good and bad feelings.

glad progress is being made! wish the same could be said for my build.

the issues are unfortunate but always occur. now you got me thinking of all the things that havent gone to plan in my build...and the many more that will. i guess thats the fun in home builds!

keep it up man she will be top notch soon!

It'll get worse before it gets better, trust me.

Mike, glad to see the car running great. There's always a positive even if your basket is full of negatives, just have to identify it. 360whp is good for low 12's and if you can get traction, you'll be in the high 11's.

Get the few items you need to sorted and go back to get your 400whp badge.

Thanks dude... To me, it depends on the magnitude of the build... Installing & shaking down onsies & twosies is no big deal... but shaking down EVERYTHING all at once gets a little bit frustrating lol

You'll get there man... Just don't sacrifice the vision in your head for 'quick & easy', low quality stuff & you'll be there in no time!

All over it... Just need time. Been researching a bit; and found that unlike 'standard' electric pumps, Walbros tend to die slowly vs. just stop working. In light of that, I am gonna do everything I can to ensure good flow, and run some more grounds to see if I can't get my charging voltage down to 14 or so...

Pretty sure I got it figured out... The connector Yury sent me a while back for the speed sensor signal (auto-manual swap)... also carries the alternator charge signal (D'Oh!). In addition to the fuel pressure/pump issues, it was charging at 15.1-15.6V... tells me power wasn't getting to everything like it should be... Put that connector in today- battery went right back to 14.2V constant charge & the car feels amazing in boost again!

Still keeping her at 1.0-1.1bar & <6,200rpm till I can verify, but I'm confident it's gtg.

Additionally, I rechecked/retorqued all the fuel lines & verified no leaks & put 5/16" lines back at the pump to hardlines. Fuel pump splices are 14-16ga wire & everything else seems uptight...

Also, the idle is a little weird- probably from the initial tune being on unstable electrical power.

When I get back to the dyno, I'm gonna hop in the trunk & meter the pump under load to verify it's getting full power, as well as keep a close eye on the fuel pressure...

Got a relay to wire the pump to the battery, but gonna hold off on installing it till after I see her running tip-top without the 'need' for this.

Good to hear you got it sorted. I would still suggest doing a fuel pump rewire, you'd be surprised how voltage falls off at top end on these things. That's another reason why I put out the quest alternator setups as some cars just had too many things going on to keep up with it all in the high RPM's.

Cody- thanks for your kind words & wisdom as usual~

KoukiMonsta- seems simple enough- gonna be a winter project fa sho! Need to wire the sub back up & a few other things- gonna do it all in one whack whenever I feel like drilling more holes in the battery box. Right now I'm trying to concentrate on Xmas for the little ones & catching up with other stuff that went to the wayside from last semester.

Life unfolding sucks... Highly considering a partout. Anyone interested in buying this outright? Asking price will be $20G... includes all my spare and new/uninstalled stuff. Probably the cleanest, barely driven hatch you will ever get your hands on... full of cool parts; motor has <1000mi on a full build... and I'm happy to say that the majority of the parts have been mine since Japan in 2005.

Sucks to hear. I've followed your thread for a while and know that countless hours went into this, not to mention you obviously had a personal connection. I can tell you now that I'm much older cars can define toy take a back seat to real life (losing a job, having a kid, marriage, divorce, etc.) and you should not have any regrets. Take care of what's important.(end of old guy advice)

Sincere thanks for the kind words man- I've already dealt with divorce and only 2 of my 4 kids are still under 18... Oldest decided to make me a grandpa at 42 lol... For me, it's more of reaping what I've sewn in terms of spending too much too quickly. Coming toward the end of my military career, I have perfect credit; but next to nothing saved and a mound of debt... No way to end a chapter and begin the next... It's just too goddamned stressful and now every time I look at the car I see tens of thousands that could have went to something a bit more important... In perfect 20/20 hindsight, there truly is beauty in moderation. I've bitten off more than I can chew; and unfortunately there are times when one has to spit EVERYTHING out in order to take a more appropriately-sized mouthful... end of OLDER guy rant
