I was wondering how many of us 240'ers has universal mufflers, and how they sound compared to a 500 buck N1? would a 2.5 universal sound ok, i know it would sound bee'ish but would it soung good at all just check before i lose 100 bucks.

I have a universal Focus muffler that was on the car when I bought it. It's not loud at all and it looks better than stock, but I'm goign to get an N1 when i get the money together. I think most of the universal mufflers are ricey.

I'm going to tell you a story about a friend of mine who was "doing the best he could with the money he had." He bought a turbo muffler for his integra...and since it was not welded or even installed correctly, it was stolen. Plus it sounded like shit and really wasn't doing much because the rest of his exhaust was stock. IMHO you should wait till you have the money to do something the right way before doing anything at all. (this works out as well, because if you decide to get a full exhaust, you haven't wasted the money on another muffler)

Well, I'm gonna go for the Universal Hi-Perf 4 cyl muffler is perfectly fine. Probably as good as the 500 dollar version. A 240 should never sound "beeish" because it's engine design prohibits it for the most part. We have a fairly large displacement, and our engines operate much differently than Hondas. Theirs are meant to operate at high rpm continually, and have fairly small displacements, thus making them sound like overgrown weedwackers. Ours have much more torque/size, and that affects the exhaust note. I paid 35 bucks for my muffler, and I feel it was every bit worth it. Cheap, too! Doesn't sound the slightest bit ricey, and doesn't really get loud unless I punch the gas.

ok, so i work at a convinent store. in hermosa beach... and people here try to floss w/o all the money. trust me, my ear is trained well, i've heard all kidna bee puking, mosquitio farting, and not-enough-backpressure-squeel noises. and for sure, i'm going stock, or a good aftermarket one.

I'll give you that. A universal muffler can definitely sound like a mosquito fart, or worse, even in a 240. However, the universal muffler itself is not to blame. You have to match the entire exhaust piping with the particular muffler you plan to use.

My truck, for example, had 2" tubing from the manifold back to the stock double muffler setup. After the second double muffler or the cat, I can't remember which, it necked down to 1 and 3/4's. All I did, was replace the double mufflers with a single universal 4 cylinder (not a glasspack), and have them put 2" to the rear from the 1 and 3/4 section. With that combination, the exhaust note sounds fine. A little loud, but not buzzy or mosquito-ey. < Is that a word? Wish I would have put on headers, but don't know how much that would affect exhaust note. I imagine it would be much louder.

Hey, what does "ricey" mean? I'm looking for basically a better looking stock muffler that isn't loud at all, any recommendations?

I've got a universal muffler, glasspack to act as resonator and 2.25" piping. Sounds real nice... Would sound better if my piping was mandrel bent.
