^ i beg to differ..
i get asked alot so here's a mini write up 1st step CLEANING!! hose with water and take off brake dust and dirt with all purpose clean such as simple green use scotch brite pads to take off gunk and anything else.. here's a pic of the cleaning prosses 2nd step Masking get news paper and cover up any area's that you don't want to be painted such as the polished lip of a mesh rim.. use Blue painters tape to get the edges of any part of the rim you don't want to be painted, double check every thing is covered before you go on to the next step here's an idea (not my rims hahaha) 3rd step Primer before you do you might wanna wet sand the rim using fine grit sand paper to take off paint that seems thick(try 320 grit), if the paint seems thin go ahead and just primer (the paint was thin on my meshies) go over it 3 or 4 times and wait for it to dry for 10 min before coating again only need one can 4th step PAINTING after the primer has dried.. go ahead and do the first coat wait for it to dry (use the same method as the primer) do 5 light even coats and let them sit for a while and air dry .. if you're painting mesh you only need one can of this this is what it looks like after if you want the paint to last, you can use duplicolor clear coat to seal the paint about 2 light coats but you would have to sand this off if you plan on changing the color of your rim but thats pretty much it the blue one

scuff lightly with sand paper. clean sand paper residue rag thats damp or with a degreeser prime than "scuff" very light apply color of cloice. make sure no runs let dry apply clear coat so brake dust can be removed.. walla. the aircfaft clean saves u a ton of time trust me. and ud be supprised how rims come from the factory my weds farmas were painted buut polished from factory under it. just my experiace

Did we really need a thread on how to paint shit? I'm going to go out on a limb here but I think anyone with a brain would know this. I was using spray paint in the 4th grade and grasped it pretty well back then.

you don't need the tires removed. a quick and easy mask is to get index cards and insert them between the tire and the lip of the wheel. it looks like one of those guards you put around your dog's head after they have surgery or something.

i did some a while back here is how we did it
take off factory finish with aircraft paint remover(love this stuff) line edge of wheel between tires with poker cards. used masking tape to mask the "lip" painted using a gunmetal color from dupli-color in a rattle can...(lightly, 5 coats.) removed masking tape... painted using a high temp clear coat.(2-3 coats, cant remember) remove cards... these wheels were rocked daily for over 2 years already and still look good, if i can find some pics i will post them.
