playing commercials, old movie trailers, etc. in a theme bar. any legal issues? i know you have to pay to play music.

like public presentation of video clips or commercials and so on. like there's this sushi place/club combination up by where i work that has flatscreens all over the place, playing a montage of old kung fu movie clips. should they be paying residuals for that?

the reason i ask is because i had this idea for an awesome bar, except it probably wouldn't be awesome because it'd be a fat sweaty sausage party. five bucks at the door, and then it's full of old arcade games on free play. ms pac man, dig dug, defender, asteroids, all the old school shit. and then maybe some 90's stuff like street fighter 2 and mortal kombat and cruis'n USA and area 51.. oh yeah.

and then a bar to try to actually make money. but it'd suck because, again, who's going to want to play a bunch of 80's arcade games. old nerds.

unless i had it very near one of the colleges, or on one of the trendy strips. then i bet it could pull some alternative bitches.

anyway horrible idea, just wondering if i could play ray charles diet pepsi ads on mute

There is a CLub like that in Los Angeles Called Blue Mondays. Its hosted on Mondays for all the people that hate working on Monday. I dont think you have to pay residuals on stuff Like that. And Also there is a bar In culver City that Play old kungfu Movies and Mad Max style movies on Wednesday's. Its called Carbon. Im looking into doing the same thing. Start small and first off with beer.

I would imagine they would be happy that you are playing their advertisments for free?

Then again all sorts of things that make perfect sense are wrong.

Check with a legal professional, you can always call the closest law school to you. Get some free advice.

i'm not actually opening a bar, i'm just wondering about the legality. i know a couple music venues downtown like to play movies on a flatscreen behind the bar before the shows start. they play them on mute with the music up. pretty sure there's an FBI warning before each movie saying that's illegal? :/
