Welded diff help
I have a 92 s13. 5 spd non abs. I recently bought a diff from a buddy. But his car has abs. Well i plate welded the diff with my mig. There was some splatter and lots of little metal balls from the welding. It wouldnt turn at first after i welded it. Put it on started the car and now it turns freely. I drove it around the block flushed the diff. And added some 80w90. But i ran out so i put some 15w40 to top it off. Diff was quite and fine. Got my new tires installd and now it makes like a whinning/howling/scratching sound from it. Could it just need to be flushed again? Also my old diff had no hold for a sensor. This new dif has a hole towards the driveshaft for a sensor. But my car doesnt have one. Do i need to cover it?

Come on, you seriously had to ask if the hole in your diff needs to be covered? Put the sensor back in it and cut off the wires.
You really need to take that diff out and clean it up, if it locks up on you your going to crash. Welding it inside the case is really a bad idea, just like not plugging that hole. Nothing, I repeat nothing can be floating free in there, and nothing can be stuck to the gears.

Sounds like you welded it with a shitty flux core welder since you got spatter everywhere. If you welded it shitty it can break and it'll make grinding, crunching, or whining sounds.

So let me get this straight, you halfassed the job because you didnt want to take the time to do it right, and then wondered why its making sounds it shouldnt? Ontop of that, you left a sensor port open, and wondered if it should be left that way? Seriously?

And people really ask why Florida is at the end of almost every joke in Zilvia.
Start using your damn head and retrace your steps and rule everything off. The only thing that you messed with was the diff. You didn't take it apart from the housing. Your welds sucked and aren't clean. You mixed oil. You haven't opened the cover up to inspect everything. If you want my honest opinion, nobody is going to be able to answer your question because they probably did their shit correctly: welding it cleanly, not mixing gear oil, etc. |

I cant wait for this diff to blow itself out and just suddenly lock while he's on the freeway doing 70 mph...
Which part of FL are you from so I know to stay the fuck away from that area when I head down that way for Thanksgiving? |

You welded it while still inside the pumpkin... That is halfassed. Don't ask people a question and get butthurt when you don't like the answers.
And lol track car... Automatically makes any halfassed haggard job acceptable. Gotta love some 240 people. |

did you switch drive shafts ? a none ABS drive shaft is longer in length than a ABS drive shaft. The reason why one diff has a hole for a speed sensor and the other has no hole. double check your work maybe your drive shaft angle is off and causing alot of vibrations.

You do realize more amps does not necessarily make a weld better.

Half assed attempts at fabrication will get you half assed results. Yes, you half assed it by not doing it properly. Your best would have been to do it the right way, step by step. Now get on the freeway and go as fast as you can, that sound will buff out eventually. Taken from the prestigious Urban Dictionary: HALF-ASSED: When you do something but don't give it your all, always resulting in whatever your doing turning out poorly or incorrectly. Doing things Half-Assed is more than just an act, it's a way of life for most Americans. Example: Person who thinks devil280z is smart: Youre a smart kid, I don't understand how you're failing so many classes. xoxide: It's because he does a Half-Assed job at everthing he does. devil280z: Well sorry if you don't like my way of life, after all , Half-Assed is the way i was raised.

alright, let me come in and clear things up. i've welded 6 differentials for people (mig weld, gas) and have never taken them out of the pumpkin. i've just brake cleaned and wire brushed them, dried it all out, heated then welded. NEVER have i had one break and it's a lot easier in the diff. your welder isnt' really sufficient to weld a differential though, that's a pretty small welder, i would only feel comfortable doing it with a 220V welder.

There's alot of crybaby pussy talk in here. ALOT.
1. For those flux hating.... You can weld a diff with flux core and not have it break. Preheating, clean surface and MULTIPASS. If you have never read through a thick welding class book in a classroom for welding, shut the fuck up. Dont even quote me to talk shit. The few i have welded i did with 220v gas. millermatic and was so easy. Maybe because trained? Flux core is a bitch but it can and has been done. 2. (OP) Youtube and google welded diff. Headbutt yourself in a mirror for having forum access and failing to look at SHIT before attempting this task. 4. Because fuck three and fuck keeping gear oil where it's supposed to be. Run all the same gear oil. Would you mix synthetic and mineral oil in your engine and beat the shit out of the rev limiter with the valve cover(s) off? If the answer is yes: More power to you. If the answer is no: Run head first as hard as you can into your radiator core support. that should fix what is wrong with you. This method also applies to being a sissy girl.

Yea that's retarded. I left a hole open in my dif, do you think I need to cover it?
When you try to take out that fluid from your diff and see that there's nothing inside.... you will hopefully understand why. |

I welded the diff up on my buddy's miata and he rapes the shit out of it and it hasnt broke. I did weld it in the pumpkin and I did use a 220 welder but the key is just makin sure it's all really clean and laying down good strong welds.
