How do you deal with...
Depression. At one point or another, we all deal with it.
Sometimes it seems like you're running into a rut in life, and don't know what the hell you're going to do next. And I'm concluding, I am in that rut. Wake up in the mornings, or up at late nights wondering what the hell am i doing with life, and all that crazy jazz. And when I do return to school, I'll be damn sure i won't know what the hell im going to major in, or what i wanna do in life. My passions in life have been forgotten, and its damn hard to reignite once its burned out. All i seem to be doing now is working 40+ hours a week, and sitting around at home. Any suggestions? And no, razors won't be a good answer. I'm not THAT emo. Like Cream-in-the-Mouth Dan. ![]() |

Depression? I really dont get it anymore now that I got my s13, just have financial breakdowns here and there.
Best way to deal with it is do everything you can to get your life to where you want it.

Get a long term goal and strive to complete it. Smaller goals that can be completed during the short-run help me as well. I set small and long term goals for myself by specific dates and I always acheive them.
For instance, my SR20DET is getting a complete makeover. I expect to have it done as soon as my parts come in (Hurry up Wendell haha). I want my car running by the beginning of this year and I'll make it happen. This is short-run goal, something I can acheive within' a month.

join some clubs, keep yourself busy doing something worthwhile..
If you family has a history of depression or after you've tryed new hobbies or clubs and they don't work.. it could be a chemical imbalance, in which case consult a therapist to find which anti-depressant would be the best for you.

i usually tend to eat more, buy more car parts, get more depressed until i get my parts, because i spent money i didn't have to begin with. i'll also play GT4, wash my car, or call friends. i would have said hang with my GF but she just broke if off so that's no longer an option
, i guess i'll just take my dog for lots of walks on the beach. |

i used to be really depressed, blah blah blah. got a girlfriend, life seemed perfect. we broke up. back in a ditch.. nowadays, i just try to have fun at everything. i will admit i have small "crashes" very frequently. or i just feel down for no fucking reason. it really is frustrating. i went to college for a semester. its not for me. there isnt a day that goes by i dont worry about my future as a 'professional', or the financial part of it. but thats just it. i have infact figured out a couple small tricks. when you have time to sit and think, is when you crash most. would you agree? when you have time to sit and think, you're fucking yourself... so get out of the house. surround yourself with people. especially people that arent downers. those buddies that are a little crazy and goofy tend to make you smile the most.
as far as setting goals for yourself goes.. if you're anything like me, setting a long term goal is a waste of time and brain power. short term goals are the only ones i can seem to accomplish. and i mean VERY short term.. like within 1-2 days at MOST. i just cannot focus on things for very long. ADD is a prick. i always get sidetracked, and have NO MOTIVATION. perhaps the origional poster is in my boat somewhat? i drink, i smoke, i chew tobacco. little things like this. i have to be doing something to keep a cool head. hell, chewing gum sometimes helps. its really strange. but since ive started the above 3, i think less about 'how shatty my life is'. sounds fucked, i know. again, im sure someone can relate. haha. my mom always told me that being depressed is selfish. at the time i felt kind of like, "whatever, fuck off, leave me alone". but, she's not crazy. i re-think all those times she told me that nowadays. shes absolutely correct. theres always somebody worse off. therefore, feeling bad for 'you' would be very selfish. whatever. i dont think im a dumbass, i just think my head works a little different than it should. all it is, is a challenge to overcome. you'll find a little vise that helps you get out of ruts.

That is half the reason I drink. Drink until you dont have conjugal ability. It works great while you're not sober. Though trying to elude depression with alcohol is not a very smart way. It works some what, but then during the day you are lazy from the hangover, and dont want to do anything, and dont enjoy anything, so you just sit there depressed. . I have rolled too many times and had/have a fucked up life, but am getting better. I still go through phases (every 2-3weeks or so) on giving up on life. An hour ago I turned in my calc final with only my name on it. Then come home to find that the IRS dont want to renew my greencard, due to me being stupid in my younger years. Depression is weird, I should be down because I failed calculus and possibly gonna be deported, but I cant be happier because I have a busy day ahead of me. So in summery, I think boredom is what is fueling your depression. Think of anything to do, think of something to do on your car. A simple experiment on your car like making some sort of intake that is different then everyone elses and see if its more superior to traditional systems. Things like that. Go to Starbucks, grab a coffee, sit outside and just relax. You should see my depression threads from a couple of years ago.
Think of it this way. There is no dohcbat or sr20bat or CAbat. You are Zilvias only bat. We wont let our only Sochbat be depressed. You're a good influence and person on Zilvia, so Im sure you're just as great in person. So dont worrie about it, I'm sure it's just a phase that you will soon snap out of.

are you in school, if so join a club, a social one preferrably, maybe join a frat, just like old school, haha
you need social interaction, go out and find some companion, either short term or long term, clubs/bars/etc... start your own business and by then you'll forget all about depression |

also working out fights depresion. start going to the gym a bit, or just on a jog. I always like to hang out with good friends whenever things head south for a bit. things go bad in life every once and awhile, just don't let yourself get down. getting stuck in a rut is the quickist way i know of to feel like shit, besides not sleeping that is. anyways go out and have fun. i would suggest Surfing, driveing, or Hikeing. those are always fun. Also geting a girl is a hassle at first. unless you already have one that you have been working for a while i wouldn't suggesting getting a girl as a quick fix. seen too many head case chicks get snatched up that way. then you have to off a crazy chick, witch is dangerous at best.
or just look at my sig "sobriety is for pussies." |

Hahahaha, Thanks for all the input.
I honestly didn't think i'd get this many responses, more along the lines of "Just end it" or "Come to the Emo-Side" and that jazz. I've somewhat become a hermit of sorts, and initially, i thought it'd be a quick adaptation, but sad to say, i was wrong. I've been working out, and that jazz, but somewhere, things aren't working out. So, i guess its just wait it out a bit, see if things change, if not, bottoms up! Anymore input is awesomely welcome. ![]() |

i think everyone gets depress from time to time. just keep urself busy with whatever. go out with friends, work more, go do something! dont just sit there and feel sorry for urself, cuz thats not gonna do anything for u. and if that dont work, maybe u should see a therapist and let them tell u that life sucks and
(wait, its suppose to be life is good , my bad) u live, u die. and until u die, just try to be happy ![]() |

This is rather helter-skelter, as I tend to write stream-of-consciousness so you will notice some skipping around.
I've been through depression. Right now, I'm dealing mostly with loneliness, which is kinda a dull ache that doesn't interfere with life but requires you to let out a sigh or two every once in a while. When I was depressed, I worked on my car as much as possible. I detached myself from reality because reality sucked for a coupe months. (Girlfriend issues...) The thing is that depression actually accomplishes nothing. You're tired, you're bored, you're generally apathetic. Lame. Change something. I changed how I dress. I got a job. I worked out. I went shooting. I'm now a happy dude. I make bank (and am considering getting a second job to increase my monetary intake by about 40%) and have a fantastic car. I have a great job working with good people. I have a project car that will make me thousands next year. I'm going to turn those thousands into more thousands and continue the cycle. Making money is happiness to me. Maybe you should buy cars and flip 'em after doing a little work. Working out releases endorphins which will make you a happier person. The only thing is that actually making a change in your body is harder than it seems and may frustrate you. Don't puss out and start an addiction. Through the worst of it my only addiction was anger and it got me nowhere fast. I put a hole in the wall and broke a couple tools. Probably shaved a couple years off my life while I was at it. Now that I look back I frown upon my behavior. I am almost always up to talk so feel free to e-mail, PM, or IM me. This goes for anyone on zilvia as well as sohcbat. Oh yeah, and drive for no reason in some random direction. I decided that on the 26 of this month, I'm heading north along the coast. Where I stop is anyone's guess. Where I sleep is anyone's guess. Making everything up on the fly is a good way to break monotony. |

Here's the thing I dont like about the "keep yourself busy" advice.. esp. in his situation, which is exactly what I am going through right now (not knowing what youre gonna do to support yourself/etc etc), that doesnt solve the core of whats bothering him -- which is, namely, wtf he gonna do with his life.
It's not a solution, just a convenient band-aid that, while it may be useful in the short-term, will lead him to experience another crash, which will make it worse for him in the long-term. mr. bat, I feel you, cause I am literally going through the exact same shit right now. My best advice to you is simply keep working, but try to keep it at least 40 hrs/wk, so you have some time to yourself to just relax. DO shit you enjoy. Drinking, watching movies, whatever. The most important thing, though, is to not overexert yourself at this point by working too much (very stupid idea IMHO), and also, to try and figure out what exactly you want to study when you return to school, and that, hopefully, it can lead to a career that will keep you relatively pleased. Maybe try talking to a counselor at your local CC or whatever and see if maybe they can help you figure something out. Good luck bro, holla if you need us |

i know some of you, well, perhaps, most of you guys would think that anything that having to do with God is senseless, illogical. But, whatever your leanings may be, just hear me out, as I have gone through the cycles of depression. Today, we have the "self," which can be attributed to our modern, introspective nature, and it has become our life's goal to satisfy it through money, sex, sensations, etc. However, as many of you know, we simply cannot satisfy ourselves by our self. (The individual "self" and our goal to appease it really is a modern day concept, as those before would not share our narcissistic view, but that's a whole other issue.)
My relationship with God, though, has switched the focus from myself to Him and has satisfied my inability to provide myself happiness. In a sense, my troubles are no longer my own. I no longer worry about life--at all. Crutch? Displacement? No, and No. I could get more into it, but I won't. But trust me, I'm an English/philosophy major and i've been reading books and discussing similar matters since... forever. Sartre, Rousseau, Plato, Nietzsche, Shakespeare, Marx, Milton--all, fall short. Again, i'm just telling my experience and giving you an avenue to look into after all the, as Kazuo put it, "convenient band-aids" fall off. ![]()

Ever since I've let God take care of everything for me, I've found myself so much more less stressed. Best part about it is that everything always works out. I've got too many stories proving this in my life, but I too see that there are a lot of people here that have their own set ways of seeing thing and probably wouldn't want to hear me out. None the less, if you've tried it all, why not give God a shot, you really don't have anything to lose. It seems to have worked for both of us, why would you be any different? Wouldn't hurt any. |

+1 for church too. don't just go to any one though. go to the one that you feel at home with the people and ideas being presented. also don't worry about where you are going in life. life is not going somewhere it's is how you get there. make the most out of every day. The most regrets i have aren't from the stupid things i've done, but for not taking chances on doing shit. so do your best, know there is no end goal in life we all die, but know that living IS the point of life. and the more you auctually live vice just exsisting from day to day the more you will enjoy it. life is kind like that guy's above post about going for a pointless drive. he know where he is going to end up. back at home. how long he's out for and what he does on that drive is what will convince him that it was worth the effort and a thouroughly enjoyable experience. of course it helps to have religion to accept the fact that you are going to die and to belive that there is something more than just eternal nithing after life, but that is a diofferent issue. oh and by the way if you are trying to hard to force your life, it won't work. been there tried that. if you end up going in a direction that isn't right a bunch of "strange and coincidental" hapening s have always ensued for me that kinda guie me in what i can/can't do. but not in aa bad way, just with little stuff. like changing jobs, moving, making friends etc. try just lettinglife take you wher eit will and see what happens. always works for me whenever i feel lost. if your'e lucky it will take oyu to a bunch or random electrical problems with your car that bases of a non-OEM starter. if so get ahold of me cause ofter months of working tirelessly i have fixed the problem. and feel happy that i have learned something new.

Damn, well I don't know if what I'm about to say has been said.. but I don't want to read through some of those long posts..
Haha.. goals man. Each day set new ones. Make a check list of things you want/need to accomplish and make sure they get done. Get out. Being a hermit sucks.. I started doing that after I left my girlfriend and was away at school where i didn't know anyone (transfered).. It beats down on you hard!! Getting out is the best thing you can do. You'll eventually meet people who will take your mind off things and help inspire you. Seeing other people motivated helps me to get motivated as well.. You have to draw strength from inside, 'cuz everything else doesn't last.

i would have to agree with people about God. i used to be all depressed but God has really helped me. but eventually u gotta remember when it comes to God its not about satisfying urself, it just comes as a reward when u live for God. i think this is the only thing that can really help, cuz everything materialistic will fade away because objects can't have feelings back for u, and as for people, they can love, but since when have people been perfect. i have lots of things i could share about God working in people's lives. like just last week my church went to homeless shelters feeding people and praying for them, and people with injuries like broken ankles got healed on the spot. God still works miracles and prophets and all that still exist. just look into history and there are records of stuff like the Jesus movement in the 50's and all. people are just afraid to believe in it, so choose not to publicise it.
this weekend my church is actually having a prophetic and healing conference where people can come be healed of their sickness, and maybe even be prophecised over. yea... http://www.blessedintl.com/ people with depression should look more into it. what have u got to lose? |
