Its a 78 Yamaha 750 special. Old cruiser bike.
Now that its finally starting to warm up some outside i started ordering stuff for it. Just yesterday i ordered some new handle bar controls (throttle, brake master, start, signal switches ect) to replace the old gaudy ones to something modern. Picked the new ones up off a wrecked Suzuki SV650. Hopefully the swap goes well. |

Another quick update.
The bike is getting really close to completion. I was having some electrical issues with the headlight, tail light, and turns. All that has been taken care of. that is such a relief. All there is to do now is get it to run right. We still can't get it to fire up all the time. The carbs need to be synced and some other little stuff. But at this point it's just getting it to run right and it's DONE. I'll get pics up of how it looks soon. Been super busy.

Any suggestions of some nice mirrors then? I have looked and looked and looked and haven't found anything I like. Something along the cafe racer style.

I really really didn't want to do mirrors like this but I've gotten mixed responses from people about bar end mirrors. Plus they are pretty pricey. What do you guys think of these?

That was pretty much my thought process. I like that they are black too. I didn't want chrome ones.

Though they suck for visibility and make your bike wider so you need to be a little more mindful about lane sharing.

^^^Idk, bar end mirrors have always looked really weird to me. Although, if you really wanted to stay true to the 'cafe look', you'd definetely want to get some. Since you're not really building an all out traditional cafe racer, but more of just a 'cafe inspired' bike, go with what you'd be the most comfortable with, aswell as what looks the best in your opinion. Have fun with it. Can't wait to see it complete. Good luck.

All of this looks good............
my only question is why did u not take the whole bike fully apart and started with cleaning up and cutting, then painting the frame? then u build up the engine, etc. put on only the needed things. keep it simple as possible with engine, fuel tank, light electrics, seat and wheels. less weight and that emptiness look is what cafe racer is all about. ur bike looks more like a bobber or a rat rod bike. anyways, good build, enjoy what u are doing and have fun, thats the most important. |

And yeah, it's not an exact Cafe, just more inspired by that look. Thanks for the compliments though. Here's some updated pics. This is the first time we had the bike actually running on the road. We're still working out some carb issues (just ordered a jet kit. Bike is running way too lean) and that's pretty much it. BTW that's not me, it's my brother in law Joe.

I like it.
Been doing some light searching for a 70s CB550, but not as many around me as I'd like.

Just when you thought, "Booo, Mel failed and never finished this build Neg rep xInfinity!".
The problem was still with the carbs. We (my uncle, my brother in law) had them apart like 3 seperate times, cleaned'em as well as we could. They went for a dip in Yamaha's carb cleaner that they don't even sell anymore, and still nothing. The bike just would not run. Well finally I decided to take it to a local shop that woks on nothing but 70's/80's Japaese and Euro bikes, nothing American. Well there happened to be some miscommunication thanks to my dad who I had bring the bike there and instead of working on my carbs they worked on some other shit that I could have done myself and it cost me $300. They said it would be another $300-$500 to get the carbs done at that point so i said fuck it I'll just come pick it up. I was pissed and almost ready to give up for sure. Then finally my uncle was talking to someone at his work and he found out they have an ultra sonic cleaning thingy. Well we broke the carbs down one more time, he put all the parts that could go in there through the cleaner and I got them back in the bike yesterday... AND THE THING STARTED RIGHT UP! I mean like it never has before. It's damn near running like it's new. It needs a little bit of tuning but other then that all the real issues are gone and it fuckin runs! I'll have finished pics up for sure in the next couple weeks!

Bike looks good but I agree with Eric, ditch the gauges. I think it would clean up the front a lot!
this thing is amazing damn it, I just made a few phone calls and picked up a '71 cb125 for free that was sitting in my buddys shop. God damn it.....................

Old bikes are so rad.
I need to find one that isn't popular, but is basically the same thing. CB's are either overpriced or hunks of shit that need a ton of work. 3000 bucks for a turd of a bike that's in mediocre condition, nah...I'd rather spend 6000 get a 600rr and beat pussy away all day.

Well it's damn near winter here now. Everyone is done riding. I got the bike to fire up and run right after having the carbs done, but I couldn't get it to fire up again. So, I'm gonna give it one last go in spring and if I can't get it to run right right away I'm selling it and moving on. Too much time not riding.
