Whistle from fuel pump in 92 Vert

Hi guys, I'm new here and I just bought my first 240sx and I got it for a good deal, I like to think, at $3000. Bone stock KA24DE Vert with a 5 speed swap and 5 lug hub. My fuel pump is uber loud and my gas mileage is complete shit (90 miles = half a tank). There is what looks to be an external fuel pump in the trunk hidden behind a doghouse. I'm not completely sure since it is a vert and things are moved around for the top. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The more I look at it. It looks like the top's pump to me. This makes a lot more sense. haha. So, let me rephrase my question. How in the world do I access the fuel pump. I can't seem to find anything about changing the pump in a Vert.

That is the pump for the top. As for your fuel pump making noise it is old and probably dying, mine got loud in its last days. The access to the fuel pump is in your trunk and exactly the same as every other stock S13, nothing special. I suggest you find the FSM for the S13 and then find the Vert supplement guide, it will tell you almost all you need to know.

Another reason the fuel pump may sound loud, could be an aftermarket fuel pump like walboro fuel pump which are very loud. Thus explaining poor milage dumping more gas. Or could be a dying pump?

I don't believe a pump that is aftermarket will dump 7 gallons of fuel over 90 miles xD Anyhow, I just ordered a new OEM pump from the Nissan store I work at. Also, if anyone needs some OEM parts. Let me know

Pull up the trunk carpet and you will see a access plate, then another under it, then the pump, this is also a good time to take a qtip and wipe down the contacts for the fuel gauge. Mines a hell of a lot more accurate now and doesn't suddenly drop a quarter tank over a mile and instead keeps up with the proper fuel level. Also if you are sucking up fuel like crazy its a good indicator that you are running rich, its time to change your engine temp sensor the two prong one, that or you have a big leak but that would be very apparent.

When you say dropping a 1/4 tank, do you mean it's actually dumping fuel, or just the gauge contacts are shit and give a false reading? And, is there anyway to recondition the pump so I don't have to spend the $200 for a new pump?

It would just skip around because the contacts were dirty, I was actually driving far enough to use that fuel but the gauge would stick. As for fuel pump don't buy a OEM one, get a walbro for 70 bucks.

I was looking for some cheap ones, but I don't know much about how the LPH works, if they throw more fuel, or if they are adjustable. I figured OEM would supply the right amount of fuel for my MPG. Driving 100 miles a day is painful on gas and every dollar counts on a Full-Time student/work budget. Mind getting me in the right direction to the pump I need? Oh, and by the way. I clicked the idle adjustment link on your sig. Helped me drop from 1.2k to 650-750 like it should be <3

GOOD NEWS! I think I fixed the problem! When the idle was set high, I think the LTFT was set to start high, and run high. So when I lowered it. the computer picked up the lower demand and lowered the fuel demand for all gear. in fourth, the normal RPM went from 3k to 2.5k and fifth from 3.5k to 3k. I might not have to buy it at all! We will see over the next few days. You signature is the best thing in the world. The buzzing is completely gone. I kept hearing it even when it was running at highway speeds, and at idle when at lights and such. Now it's as quiet as a mouse.

Check your engine coolant temp sensor, even if its not OEM it could still be bad, I have replaced mine three times now. This last time I got an OEM one and its lasted far longer than the Napa or autzone brands.
