Info about the game:

Offering more than ever before, the world's favourite racing game is back and it's the best!

25 Jun 03 Thirty-two million sales later and the Gran Turismo series is about to enter a whole new territory of play - online racing. It's Gran Turismo! It's online! Got that? Right, let's continue.
So how do you improve on what's gone before? More cars, more courses... those are a given, but what of the really innovative stuff? How about you get to race the history of the automobile!

MORE THAN BEFORE
Godfather of GT Kazunori Yamauchi has stated that GT4 will include more cars than any previous Gran Turismo. GT2 remains the current record-holder with over 500 cars. Depending on whom you listen to, estimates for the number of different vehicles in GT4 start at 500 and reach the low thousands. We'll have to wait a little while longer for the definitive answer, but the confirmed number currently stands at over 500, and between now and release that number can only rise.

With the good news we also have to bring you the bad. Polyphony Digital has confirmed that there won't be car model damage and the online play won't support the USB headset, so you can't talk to your opponents online. Hmm, no model damage, but don't worry, that doesn't rule out loss of engine performance due to crashes. Nice.

RACE THE WORLD
As for online play, details of different races and rules haven't been revealed yet, so there's still hope that you'll be able to form clans and have three-vs-three or two-vs-two-vs-two races. Did you get the hint there? Yep, another let-down. Online play will have a grid of six cars only. Sony hasn't discounted offline play supporting more, but we have a feeling that any more than six cars on a grid will remain a pipe dream.

There are no more details as yet on the rumours that you'll be able to trade used cars online. However, used cars (much missed in GT3) are definitely in GT4, according to Yamauchi. He confirmed this indirectly by stating that a 10-year-old second-hand car will feel noticeably different to a brand new model. Aha!

TOUGHER, MEANER
Yamauchi indicates that the development of GT4 has been far more challenging than the previous titles. "Gran Turismo 3 was easy for us on PS2 because it was the first GT game on PlayStation 2. GT4 is harder because we have to outdo our own work on the same system. We have been rethinking and working hard to create a better game, and we have set ourselves goals and objectives for GT4.

"We have not extracted all there is from the PS2. We have rethought the procedures and rebuilt our technology to create an even better-looking game. We hope you agree."

PRETTIER, FASTER
The most obvious improvement is visual. The cars have always looked outstanding, but now the environments are catching up. "We have been able to increase the quality of the graphics because our designers' skills have evolved, not the hardware," says Yamauchi.

Three new environments are confirmed so far, with courses based on real locations. The most visually spectacular is a dusty rally circuit around the lip of the Grand Canyon. If that doesn't rock your world, how about cruising your way through the familiar streets of New York. And for the real car freaks there's the famous Tsukuba circuit - a favourite of Japanese motor manufacturers for vehicle testing.

WHAT A VIEW
There's far more trackside detail than in GT3, while another noticeable improvement on the rally courses is the wide open spaces you get to race through, so you're no longer boxed in by rows of trees. The New York circuits are spectacular, with more building detail than in the Seattle and Tokyo street circuits of GT3. Shadows from buildings fall across the track and famous landmarks are easily identifiable. It looks certain that Paris and London are also going to feature in GT4, so forget the car fanatics - this could be massive with tourists!

JAPANESE GLOBETROTTERS
Like everything in the Gran Turismo universe, the focus in GT4 is on realism and detail. Yamauchi and his team have travelled around the globe in their pursuit for authenticity. "We spent 10 days photographing and studying the nature of the Grand Canyon," says Yamauchi. "We studied a 40km diameter area to create our course. The rally courses are better because our technology is better and because of our physics engine, the game is easier to control."

PHOTO FRENZY!
Yamauchi and his team didn't just travel around the globe to photograph the landscapes. Another reason for their extensive travel was to find and choose the cars for GT4. The team has visited the US, Italy, France, Germany and the UK on its travels, with an army of staff and digital cameras in tow.

With military precision, the team hit a country and take over a racetrack, while manufacturers deliver a procession of pristine vehicles. Digital photos are taken of each car from a variety of angles. Then the engine sound is recorded at different increments for five seconds at a time.

Yamauchi says: "We have created an all-new car design procedure which helps to create better-looking and easier-to-create cars." We can only assume that easier-to-create cars means that we'll get to play with more of them when GT4 is released.

EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING
It's this passion and attention to detail that has earned the series the tagline 'the real driving simulator'. As realistic as we have found it so far, Yamauchi is confident that GT4 is going to be the most authentic Gran Turismo yet. "This is the first major refinement we have made to the car physics in GT since the orginal Gran Turismo," says Yamauchi.
The team has even been evaluating the time difference between cars racing around circuits, comparing reality with the performance of in-game equivalents. Any time difference between reality and the simulation is noted and then carefully adjusted, ensuring GT4 inches ever closer to realism.

DRUNK DRIVERS
Another area of improvement the team is focusing on is the artificial intelligence of the computer drivers. A common criticism aimed at the series is that computer drivers all try to follow the same line and will collide with each other needlessly because of this. This flaw is notably absent in the current build of the game. Smashing and bumping computer drivers looks like being a thing of the past.

It's also clear that the computer drivers are now far more competitive, they make fewer mistakes and are now more likely to catch up with the leader towards the end of a race..

PAST TO PRESENT
So far we're promised that GT4 will play better, and we can see from the screenshots that it looks better. What about the cars, though? Yamauchi leaves us with a bit of a riddle. "We want players to re-experience the history of cars, from the birth to the present, in a way only possible with Gran Turismo."

What does this mean? Well, we know that the Simulation mode has been renamed GT Universe for GT4. There's also the addition of virtual museums among the new car manufacturers and used-car dealers. What this adds up to is a far wider variety of cars. Most importantly, with the addition of vintage vehicles, and a time span that ranges from the birth of the race car to the latest models, GT4 simply offers the history of racing.

Gran Turismo 4 is scheduled for UK release in 2004 and US release in 2003. We'll bring you more information as soon as we can.
Some pics I found.

There is also a rumor that older cars will be able to lock thier brakes. That'll make for some interesting fun.

Ya I catch myself playing it every once in a while, either drifting or just messing around or learnging more of changes mods can do. Love playing with the suspension in my I/H/E two tone coupe .

Its in drift mode right now .

But I really need the 900 degree steering wheel to get the full effect.

Can't wait

this is why i got a ps2 haha. yea i read that gt4 is gonna be more historical in terms of car selection than the rest. can you say datsuns??? the 500+ cars supposedly available takes care of my biggest gripe about gt3, but i sure hope they fix the rest of my complaints though:

1) random prize cars suck. i hate having to race a series at least 4 times to get all the cars. i say "at least" cuz a lot of times you even win the same car!!!! WTF!! weak sauce!! this especially sucks on the endurance races and the professional league races where theres 10 races and each race is like 10+ laps.

2) the car descriptions in gt3 SUCKED!!! i hate how it scrolled along the bottom. this meant u had to read everything all at once, and memorize it, or else you'll be forced to go through it again. GT2 was better cuz it was all in paragraph form, so deciding between which cars to buy were a lot easier.

3) menus can still be tweaked better. especially when buying stuff, why do i need to press X 4 or 5 times to install something. that last screen taht informs you of the increase in horsepower is pretty useless.

basically...i thought that gt2 was a lot better than gt3 except in graphics of course.

ok complaining all done. bring on gt4 WOOOHOOO!!

1. Ya random cars really did suck, thats why a lot of non die hard fans dont really play it anymore, cuz it'll take way to long to get cars you want.
2. Ya at times I never even bothered to read them, big waste of my time. And plus with this history stuff I am really going to want to read these. So hope they change em, and maybe make some of them more in depth.
3. Ya that was a pain. But I got in the rythm at times. Its especially a pain when I had butt loads of money and I was going to make a drift car for a vid or something. Having to go through those menus.

James - ya we are gonna have to tear it up. Make our little Zilvia crew, except we should put the Z to use. Alreasy saw the pics of the 240Z .

This history stuff sounds real intriguing. And of course used cars are back so I hope there is no limit on garage space. Cuz I am gonna have loads of old school cars.

I still remember GT2 with my r32 tearing it up. But this time around used cars will not perform as good, which is good I guess. And at least they somewhat are throwing the car damage thing in, that way people who hit you in turns on purpose will get screwed.

And man I really cant wait. I just need to figure out how I am gonna set up steering wheel and pedals, prolly onna have to get some sort of desk.

wow, those pics

GT has been great because its a single player game, and a party game at the same time. I find myself goin to my friends house almost every weekend to tune our cars and race each other, and see who can drift the best. I remember one time, my friend started bashing japanese cars and saying that jap cars are only good for straights, then I shut him up with the escudo. lol. Good times, good times.

Well thats just downright unfair. Escudo is a crazy car. But I hate driving it, too fast for its own good.

Where did he get this idea of japanese cars bieng for straights only , if anything domestics are more for straights, and they do a damn good job (at least some).

I had a bet going with my friend before the GT3 came out. He said that he would own me with a Cobra, and I said I'd own him with a skyline. Well you all know the end of that one
But now this hole petty domestic vs. import thing doesnt matter, specially since he loves driving my car

Hmm thats gonna be kinda gay, but kinda cool.

Judging will be odd, cuz then everyone will have to drift perfectly. But it is also gonna be pretty gay cuz in GT3 it was too easy to drift with a 4WD car and sim tires. Hopefully they make you drift with racing tires . That'll make all the GT3 drifters rely on suspension more than gross power and sim tires.

But either way I know there will be drifitng rooms for online play, and there are gonna be some crazy people out there. I'll plan on bieng one of em.

And wow that vid is nice. Game looks gorgeous. Glad to see that the really might be competing with the likes of Ralli Sport for XBOX.

The previous rally was kinda weak, but now it looks damn well good.

We need more videos, with sound, i wanna hear what the cars sound like this time around.

my friend is a store manager at a game store, and he told me the release date is January. But then again, whether it's December or January, always expect for the release date to be pushed back as always.

and its all because of the awesome power of my force feedback steering wheel
to bad my video card has some bug.. i cant record any of it..
i just mastered feint drift and e-brake drifting that allows me to drift waaaaayyy before the turn
but i guess i have to prove it sometimes
we'll see how this gt4 turns out..
hopefully there will be more tuning/adjustability to the car's setups

arghh you guys are getting too ahead of me. I have been drifting with my controller, and my dual shock 2 is broken so no analog buttons. So here is me tapping the gas constantly and tapping the d-pad. Dunno how I was still able to hold drifts like that.

I hope GT4 comes out in January, cuz im not gonna be here most of december, can't let you all get ahead of me .

I always hated video game steering wheels, they're too small and have a short turning radius.

BTW, anybody else love rally? Its the greatest thing to do when your with your friends.

I know what you mean, this one has a full turning radius though, still kinda small but should be much better turning radius wise.

I love rally lol its funny cuz whoever gets holeshot usually wins, cuz of the dust, unless you are familiar with the level
but with this grand canyon stuff its gonna be real hard.
