As we all see, everyone gets POD filters in their cars. But is it really necessary?

Cant see the video, and TBH cant be arsed. It adresses a complex question to a crowd of uneducated people, and judging from the title it says it is useless. If you are satisfied by people telling you what you think, then it is good.

If you want to know how your filter interacts with your engine and thus deciding on your own if a cone is good or not, read what is next.

While most cones are useless because they just filter less to get more flow in, there is actually a gain to use them.

In most car they dont put more heat in the engine, as the engine is moving. A friend of mine did the test, once you go past 15mph in an S13, air temp in a cone is the same as exterior temp.

Anyway, a cone is useful IF it really frees the intake. Mostly on a charged engine.

If you charge at say 15psi, you just get 15psi more after the compression wheel than what you had before it. If the intake is restricted and you have say 12psi before the turbo, charging at 15psi would net the same result as charging at 12psi with a completely unrestricted intake. Which means by freeing the intake of these 3 psis, you just got the same power gain you would have had by upping the boost by 3psi.

Better yet; by freeing the intake, the turbo goes most of the time in a better efficiency area, resulting in another power gain (but often spins faster so beware of overspin T25 users... ) .

But then, it only works if the previous filter you had was restricting the intake.

The thing is, it really depends on each engine, and on each car. Of course using a very small cone is useless... but getting a big one, encased in a place with a lot of air coming from the outside, would completely free the intake.

Yeah, too bad the ECU hasnt had any time to compensate for a new part being added.. plus it is tuned for the factory air-box.. if it would have been tuned for a aftermarket air filter, it would make more power..

regardless, thats good to know. Sure you can tune around it ect but as a drop in i always figured it would make some more power..
Well now i know..

And knowing is half the battle.
