Just bought a '95 SE with an auto. It only slips in 1st or 2nd, and only does it when it's cold. After a couple miles it stops. I'm not too worried about it since I'll doing a 5 speed swap soon, but just curious if this is common. Could it be the torque converter?

That's what I'll prolly do along with a new filter. I doubt many people change thier ATF every 30K. Thanks.

I'll sell you my filter and all the misc. stuff that comes with it. I've decided that the tranny surviving is the only reason I haven't swapped in a 5-speed yet, so prolonging its life is only going to promote my laziness.

have you checked the fluid level?
could be many things.
if you're going to do the swap , don't even bother putting money into the auto tranny.

oh and also, the only gears in a automatic tranny is the planetary gearset (sun gear, planet carrier/pinions , ring gear)

That's like saying I'm going to do the SR20 swap so, I'm not going to change the oil in my car. Changing the Fluid is not major work.

Only use Nissanmatic D fluid. It shifts like crap if you get something like dextron. If you get something that is not Non-synth. ashless you can mess up the valve body and really f stuff up.

Well, I just drained the tranny, and just read your post. So, it's saturday and the dealership is closed. Do you know of any other synth that would work.

NON-Synth. Synthetic will coat the clutch plates and they'll slip too much.

I've been told that Valvoline Dextron III will work.

actually, thats exactly what i did when i bought my car
it all depends on how fast and when you are able to do the swap etc.

what i meant was that he shouldn't do any major repair work on it like a new torque convertor , replacing clutches , etc.

I went to the dealership this morning to get some Nissanmatic, and the counter guy didn't know what I was talking about. He said the newer nissans take a special ATF, but that I could use any quality dexron III. I don't have another dealership to get a second opinion, so I took his word for it. I bought the Valvoline High Mileage dexron, and it's runnin like a champ! Thanks for the help!

I have an 95 sr20det swap with auto tranny and I use Mobil One syn. tranny fluild. I've had no problems so far. It's been almost a year now. Heat breaks down the tranny fluid and kills the tranny. I choose Syn. to help prevent this. An aftermarket auto tranny cooler will also help. I'm running a KOYO rad so it doesn't have a built in tranny cooler. I just bought a good aftermarket cooler and it's worked well.
