s13 WTF weird ass electical problem.

Ok. My 89 hatchback has one fuked up problem with the electical system. I really dont want to go through my entire car, rip it all apart and find a short the size of a cheerio in miles of wiring. I got 2 jobs, shit to do, school, times precious.

Basically here it is. A few weeks ago, my defrost button light started to light up with i hit the brakes. No biggy, i knew it was a short, but like i said, time is something i dont have enough of. Then my rear wiper would only work if i pushed in the defrost button. Still no biggy. Now its serious, and seriously pissing me off. The brake lights ONLY work if i have my rear defrost on, then they just stay on, no matter if i apply the brakes or not. Its unsafe, illegal, and just not too good.

I know its a short, the fuses are fine, the defroster works, et cetera. I know its probably the wiring harness running to the rear of my car. I just want to know if anyone else has had this problem, and where the short was in their car.

or you can take the wire from the brake switch that goes to the brake lights, put an inline 15amp fuse, and then straight wire it to the brake light plug. it's a mikey mouse fix but it'll get the brake lights working in under 30minutes and you wont have to waste your money on another car.

i think i kno your problem man...my rear defrost and 3rd brake light didn't work on my hb and sometimes the brake light comes on and off.
lo and behold, the harness was chopped off where it comes out the car into the hatchback. i guess it was chopped after 18 years slamming the trunk. anyways i extended the wires from inside the car and reattached the wires to the hatch and everything works now.
i'm almost 100% sure the wires are smash and shorting each other out inside the little groument between roof and hatch.

I fuckin love zivia. I think the new slogan should be "if we cant help you fix it, you might as well take a sawzall to it."

IDK. Seriously, it may work out for the better. If i buy my neighbours sentra, I can take my time and do what I want to the ol s13. I have a tendency to get carried away easily though...
