Help

my recently acquired 240 is doing some weird shit.

Ive been converting it to a drift car, took out the seats etc.

I went to crank it up the other day, dead... just tick tick tick.

new battery and now it runs rough, like its missing an engine mount (it isnt)

slowly slowly decreasing in rpms til it finally dies (over a 5 minute period or so.)

I had a vacuum leak in the cold air intake, fixed it, but still the same. when I get it up in rpms it runs so so. it bogs on occasion, til finally it doesnt want to go anymore.

the cars new to me, everything looks okay, anything I can try? alternator maybe?

Check timing...had a ka do that to me the dizzy was turned all the way to retarded and wouldn't do anything but bog..check for more vac leaks...but the alt, start the car, then unhook the battery and see if it dies if so then of corse alt is bad. Otherwise look for more vac leaks...get some brake cleaner and spray it down and see what happens.

Also is the idle roaming..?

Iac valve if so.

unhook which part of battery? positive?

idle doesnt really roam, it just slowly decreases in short jumpy increments.

Spark plug wires in the right order? spark plugs and or wires may not be working properly. And if you hear a tick noise from your starter your starter is bad. Every starter has its solenoid and when it loses the ability to get power it makes that noise.

could be fuel injectors.

check that all your injectors are firing. make sure that your fuel pump is priming and working correctly. make sure you are getting spark and that your wires are dry.

ive had a similar problem with a previous 240 where i would be driving and one cylinder would randomly stop firing and the motor shakes horribly. it was the fuel injector stopped firing so the cylinder wasn't going.

so also make sure your spark plugs are in the correct order.

first thing, make sure to get some oil in it right away !!

After that, do your spark plugs, car, and rotor.

Then go to auto zone and borrow the timing gun and buy some starter fluid.

try to get the engine started so you can check the timing.
(if not, no worries)

try and have someone turn the engine over for you and spray the starter fluid around different areas on the hoses, intake. If the idle picks up, you have a crack in the hose or intake.

also wouldnt hurt to take the fuel line out on the engine side, put it in a empty water bottle and try and turn the car over. is fuel going into the bottle?

where does this whine noise come from.

okay, on occasion of me manually trying to crank it, using the starter, it will sit pretty at 400 rpms for a few seconds once I stop, then fallonface...

just changed oil to full synthetic sexy ass pennzoil. spark plugs are on the counter, ran out of daylight. there is a tad bit oil in cylinder 3 from when I just redid the guide gaskets for the valve cover, the previous one was cracked and leaking... I dont think thats it. Im hoping it may be an injector, im scared its timing related.

I just read this http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/384511...ls-like-2.html

and it seems like thats it. from what people have said, I think mine will be fuel related. the battery died super hard recently, and this is all derived from that, new battery, now running rough and now even worse, sounds like injector took a shit. are these expensive? should I upgrade? direct OEM? just curious.

When its light out Ill have more answers.

changed the three plugs I could, now its starts and runs, but not good, still kinda like its been possessed by satan. and when I give it gas it gets all retard.

Im thinking this is fuel, or hoping so, having hard time getting the rail off, I have to run to work and will be back at 6 to finish getting injectors out to see if one is faulty.

if not what else could this be?

Get some pb blaster or some liquid wrench and keep drenching that plug. dont crank on it to hard, or it will break in the head or strip out the threads.

Soak it for an hour, give it a couple tries to jar it loose, not long pushes. If it doesnt give, keep soaking it.

You could tap the socket with a hammer a few times to in an attempt to jar/vibrate the plug out of those threads.

you said when you turn it over it makes potato gun noises which leads me to believe that your timing chain had a big jump and the valves opening at completely the wrong time.
