Wow. Officially the worst thread of Zilvia in a LONG time.
ooookay... Let me start off with, HOW OFTEN ARE YOU PEOPLE CLEANING YOUR FILTERS?!?!!? You do know you only need to do it every 50,000 to 70,000 miles right? In high performance driving in dusty, dry conditions, every 30,000. Hell, our CEO hasn't cleaned his in 200,000 miles. His car runs great, still flows fine, filters great. We had a bunch of people drive around the world, through silt, dust, mud (we pulled humongous bugs off the filter) never cleaned it, and it still flowed better than a stock paper air filter. We had a guy drive 1,000,000 miles with one K&N filter. He cleaned it maybe a dozen times, always took very good care of it. The engine NEVER had to be rebuilt. Runs like new still. 2nd, yes. This will most definitely void your warranty. Period. 3rd, yes, the K&N cleaning instructions do say use a hose, but they also have you use the cleaner to loosen up the dirt first so you only need to run a low pressure stream over the filter to get it throughly clean. 4th, those of you saying you've done this (or something similar). Just because you wash it out and see dirt, doesn't mean anything. You have no idea the amount of dirt that could've gone right past your filter element and right into your engine. Fine, you've done this for years without your engine blowing, congrats. 5 out of 6 people win at Russian Roulette too. 5th, we get a lot of people telling us that K&N oil contaminates Mass Air Flow sensors, we always ask them to send in their MAF so we can run tests on it. 99.9% of the time, it was just their dealer lying to them to scam a quick buck. This, this can not be good for the MAF, I doubt that oil/spray is made for this application, durable enough to last 70,000 miles, and is harmless to a MAF. 6th, fine, you don't have to use K&N cleaning solution to clean your filters. There's plenty of ways to do that. Cleaning solution works for me, but we've had plenty of people do it with soap and water. But the oil, that's what makes a K&N a K&N. There's dozens of air filter companies, and they all use the same materials (except those yucky foam ones, don't even get me started on those) cotton, mesh and oil. So why is it that ours filters more and flows better in our testing? Because of the oil (and we use a special kind of cotton. But mainly, it's the oil). We know what we're talking about. We have teams of people on staff that have been researching and developing these things for decades. Believe me, if silicone lubricant worked so great, we'd be using it. But it doesn't. 7th, yeah I work here. Bitchin place to be. We have race cars on dynos all day, a gigantic manufacturing plant to scope out and goto races like every weekend. Morale of the story, if you're too cheap to buy a 12$ cleaning kit, don't clean your filter. Your air filter is the ONLY line of defense your engine has from crap in the air and on the road. And I don't see how if you can't afford 12$, you can afford 300$ or 700$ to buy a new engine IF that poor line of defense you put up fails. Period. |

g6.
A lot of companies such as ours branch out and make tons of products lines for cars. I think the general consensus here is that if we did that we wouldn't have enough energy to make our air filters the best they can be. You wouldn't believe all the R&D that goes into each filter/intake system we make, and if we started making exhaust (like we did in the past) etc. we wouldn't be able to work so vigoruously at what we stand for , great filtration. I think it's awesome we don't do that, it's almost the forbidden fruit to try and make more money trying to make more products. It's typically the downfall of a company's product quality. And the one thing that has made this company what it is, is it's quality. Though that's just what I see and hear, never say never. If we ever did expand like that, I'd bet we wouldn't do it unless we could make the best product possible in that area. |

I think it might be hard for them to make a kit for as the people that swap SR's don't typically keep the factory intake piping/turbo. I have no idea. I wish they would because I sure could use one!

I've been cleaning my filters on all my cars with a hose every 3 months for the past 5 years, so about 20 times during its lifetime and still running. Nothing wrong with the cars I've owned or anything. Works great, saves gas and easy ass hell. Running K&N filters on my civic and gf e39, my SR is running a Blitz filter. I sometimes even clean the filters for the hell of it while I am watering my grass or washing my car. Welp thats what I do...if you worry about your car then by all mean DO-NOT-DO-IT or even if you have second thoughts. As for me I dont really care, till that day my engine gets screwed up then i'll stop. But I doubt a failed motor will ever happen unless I hit 220k+ miles!?! By then I'll buy another engine.

TheSquidd, I've read a report, actually, several comparisons that say that K&N's dont filter as well as other filters, but do flow more, but only by 2% or so. I run AC Delco stuff in my car b/c:
#1. its cheap #2. according to all the tests, it filters better than any other filter. any comments? (dont mean to derail, but this has been bugging me)

The cleaner K&N provides is nothing more than a "mild detergenet"- k&n.
The filter oil is something that many people sell, no longer a super-secret refined oil only k&n can formulate. JWT uses a generic based air-filter oil easily found at an auto parts store. http://jimwolftechnology.com/custome...asp?PartID=355 I'm pretty sure Jim Wolf knows what he is doing. ![]()

heh its funny how the spray they make gives it a blue tint... i bet k&n's gives it the red tint
BTW thanks whoever for the negative rep saying that even DSM guys wont even do something like this.... did it make you feel THAT much better LOL... my housemate at school has a DSM... he shows me what people do in the DSM community.. Home depot intake pipes, hope depot boost controller etc... he even made a home depot intake pipe himself and has a home depot boost controller, might be a reason he gets boost spike at high rpms... yeah it works.. but im cool from building an 3" intake from plastic piping, and a boost controller made out of water fittings

It's a balance issue. You can't filter 100% and flow 100%. Our technicians have found a pretty good comprimise though, we have a general rule to filter about 97-99%, and from what I've seen we always hit that target if not exceed it. That's where all the debate about oil comes in, the reason why we can filter 97-99% and still flow better by "2%" (not sure of our actual numbers), is because of the oil/cotton combination we've developed. We have a high flow filter, and it's the oil we use that makes it a high filtration filter. You'll never have a 100% filtration, unless you have a Hepa filter which doesn't flow and is costly to maintain. But from our tests, any dirt that gets through is negligible, only the tiniest, tiniest of microns evades the oil. (I know the OP arguement will be that what his silicone lubricant allows into the engine is only "negligible" but, it's probably not.) (This is going to sound like a salesman, but it's only because I really do believe in our product so much) Plus when you're buying a K&N, you're buying trust, trust it's been developed by experienced technicians, tested to be the best it can be, made with the highest grade materials we can get and guaranteed to last the life of your car. I don't know about you but I don't really get that trust from ebay filters and silicone lubricant spray. All of the sudden you think you're smarter than our staff of experts? Go for it. But when you fail, don't cry about how K&N sucks, we did our part, all we asked was you take care in cleaning and oiling your filters to protect your engine. By all means, start your own filter company, call it "Silicone Filters", sell em for 5$ a piece on Ebay. You'll fit in just fine. |
