I am in the advanced planning stages of a motor swap in my s14. I have a motor that runs just under 340 hp and 365 tq naturally aspirated. I am trying to plan out what i need to do to my rear end so i dont blow it up in the first month or so. Obviously the stock open diff needs to go, and Im sure that there are race axles out there that would work much better than stock. But i am looking for stabilization pieces like a panhard bar or roadcourse style anti sway bars. Anyone running this kind of power please let me know how you defeated the inevitable rear end hop and shimmies that im sure to encounter with a motor of this power range.

As I said this engine is NA so the torque curve in the lower end of the rpm band is going to be steeper than a turbo application. How much power can the stock axles and rear housing handle before they let go.

stock axles should be fine for you.

All that torque makes it a little iffy, but with a quality LSD you should be able to get by just fine on the stock equipment axle/diff housing. So long as you aren't exactly pulling peak torque launches on slicks all the time.

As for the wheel hop, it's not too bad in these chassis but, You chould definatly benefit from some subframe spacers(help tune out some of the anti-squat geometry) and some upgraded bushings all around, maybe even a few spherical ball bearing upgrades depending on how serious you are. Either way SPLparts.com should have everything you need.

What motor are you using? Thats alot of TQ for it to be NA.

V8 most likely.. but if you're doing a custom swap and have to ask a question about LSD and axles.. I think you're in over your head..

Stock axles have been known to handle 760hp but I believe Phase2 sells upgraded ones.

stock differential and a LSD or VLSD is capable of handling that kind of horsepower. If your asking these questions you need to do more research on Nissans. The R200 differential in our cars came in skylines,300zx's, Maxima's, Q45's, J30's etc... . Its the size of a Ford 8 inch rear end which means its beefy.

Thanks for the info guys. I appreciate all the suggestions. Sorry NemeGuero no dice, i am anything but a honda guy. I started out in high power domestics. My other daily driver is a 600hp mustang. Im trying to break into the road course type deal and all ive ever worked with is solid rear ends.

Im not planning a V8 swap either but im hesitant to post what im trying to do until i actually get it done and have it running. It is an inline 6 but not a nissan engine. Ive seen way to many threads on this forum disolve into motor bashing and then the guy asking the questions never gets the info hes looking for. Thats the other reason i didnt mention it.

Krustindumm, I am in the military currently serving in Iraq. I cant look under my car right now. What did you mean 'look under my car again" Its been about a year since ive been in the states but i dont remember a panhard bar being installed. And to make sure were talking about the same thing A pan hard bar is the strud that is bolted to the frame and the diff cover to reduce the torque of the motor pushing the whole diff housing sideways under load.

a panhard bar guides the rear axle laterally as it travels vertically.

The only RWD I can think of off hand that uses them for sure is GM's F-body. Alot of small FWD car's use them on solid rear axle's too.

240's use rear multi-link, in a design similar to the double wishbone pic above. There is no panhard rod, nor reason for one since the diff is mounted directly to the chassis. I'd explain a little more about rear suspension, but I gotta run.

You aren't planning a Toytoa 1JZ swap are you?

Good stability upgrade options are replacing the subframe bushings with solid or urethane, or installing spacers. Also installing traction links, toe links and UCA's with heim joints instead of bushings will decrease slop and improve feel. Quality struts, springs, and anti-roll bars will also help.
