KA loss of battery power after clutch job/starter

i recently noticed that everytime i work around the starter, some how battery completly drains.. i recently just picked up another hatch.. dual cam, and i was doing a clutch job... everything went it smoothly but once i connected the negative cable to start her up, i here a small eletrical crack... didnt really paid attention to it but once i cranked, it will turn over but not start like if my battery is dead... battery is 2 months old.. im leaning over that i have a short somewhere at the starter.. also have the same problem with my black hatch SOHC.. new battery but not turn on with battery alone... anyone have a solution to this problem???

Check your grounds!!!!
Also make sure you didn't switch the power and ground wires on the starter.
