I've been through my first two autox sessions and I've come to two conclusions.
1) I suck
2) The Kumho Ecsta Supra's the came with my car suck

I've got a spare set of Stock SE wheels (16x6.5?) and I'm shopping for tires for race day.

I've done a bit of reading and it seems the Falken Azenzis are popular. And it sounds like I don't yet know enough to buy r-compounds (I'm not even sure what heat cycling is other than what the name suggests). And I'd prefer to change my wheels at home, since it would be a pain to take a spare set to the event 30 miles away.

I'm a novice running in Steet Modified.

So I have two questions:
1) What's the widest tire I can run on 16x6.5's ? 225/50/16 maybe ?
2) What's the best tire for me right now ?

I was considering Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions, based on some advice I received. But I haven't heard of anyone autox'ing on them.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You'll find that most people, especially those who autocross frequently, will recommend the Falken Azenis Sport RT-215.

The 205/55-16 tire size is perfect for your wheels. You don't want to go more than that on a 6.5 or you will end up introducing tire squirm and other nasty side affect you won’t like.

As for the tires matching well with your skill level; you are correct on the r-compound thing from what I’ve experienced as well.

As for me, I am about to transition from the ecsta 712s (actually not a bad tire at all i thought, had nice grip, good for some respectable times my first autocross.) to S-03s. I'm going with S-03s due to the fact that I’m in a street tire class (STU) and I want an ultimate grip tire with decent tread life, good road manners, awesome wet traction, and available in 225/50-245/45 sizes.

But here is a list of most likely used by competitors:
-Falken Azenis RT-215
-Kumho MX
-Bridgestone Potenza S-03
-BFgoodwrinch KD
-Bridgestone Potenza S-02 (great tire if you can still find them)
-Toyo Proxis T1-S (so i've heard, mostly on subi forums)

By the way, if you decide to go with anything Bridgestone/firestone related check out this website, he has some INCREDIBLE deals...

S03's are a bit too expensive to tear up on an autox course. Anothe vote for azenis
